following the game on Gameday.. Did Tito come out to argue the foul ball call in RF ? did they check it on replays to confirm the call.
    Posted by TheoGM1
Yeah, he argued, but they can't check the replay on that. They only check it on hr's, and this was not a hr.
that call last inning was one of the worst ive ever seen..anyways, i hope kyle weiland never pitches another game for the redsox again, and he doesnt deserve to, he is so horrible.

Well, I would cut the kid a break.  there is no way he should be pitching in these situations.  he is not even ready to pitch at this level, never mind in the heat of a tight playoff race.  I am just dumbfounded that he is the only thing the club could come up with in this situation.  But, I don't hold it against him.  he has good stuff and may someday be a solid pitcher at this level.

spaceman, srry i dont dislike the kid, but if you cant pitch against the orioles then i dont know who u can pitch against, he is a bad pitcher and doesnt belong in the MLB, he isnt even good enough to be a AAA pitcher
In Response to Re: Game Thread 9/19 Orioles v. Red Sox Game 1 : Yeah, and just imagine how much better they'd have been with a full lineup. Who replaced PD and Youk? I don't even remember, but they weren't as good as the originals. Can't get away from it AM, injuries killed this team last year. Beckett hurt his back in NY, and was never the same. It happened after he signed the extension, well after. Part of his trouble was that he was OUT OF SHAPE, something he fixed this year in the off season, and look at him now.

    Offense wasn't the problem

How many games did Papelbon blow?

How many relievers not named Bard contribued out of the pen?

    It was the pitching.

Lowrie and Bill Hall filled in for Pedey and VMart & Lowell played 1B but again, not the issue

    They scored over 800 runs

Beckett, Lackey, Wakefield, and Dice K had ERA's around FIVE

Even if you claim Beckett was hurt, when he came back in August he continued to get knocked around with the same ERA of a robust 5.00 (it was just no longer 8 as it was prior).

Paps and Okie blew clam chowder

    that was the issue

    not injuries

Be a shame if one got away and flew into the O's dugout. (Showalter) You never can tell with these pitchers. They sometimes have unexplained control issues.

Have to agree there - this first game is a must win if for no other reason than to give the Sox some confidence plus add a 1/2 game lead over TB.

wouldn't Aceves be a better option to start the game today instead of Weiland on 3 days rest.. He certainly would have fared better than Weiland and could have given us atleast 5 innings...

The umps have taken away at least two runs from the sox today! Josh Reddick was called out looking on ball four. He would have scored. Papi't rbi double was taken away from him. Who knows how many more the sox tack on after those bad calls. Those terrible calls are a big difference in this game so far. Let's hope the sox catch fire and take today's games. They will be in a more comfortable position then

There's the key. If nothing else, they could have started Lackey in game one. As maddening as he is, he has a better chance than Wieland out there. He's been better in day games as well.

Hmm ... let's see here. The Sox averaged 5.5 runs per game in the first half of the season when everyone was healthy last year and 4.5 runs per game in the second half when the injuries mounted.

Yet according to andrw, injuries had nothing to do with not making the playoffs last year.

Sure, had Papelbon been better as well as some of the other pitchers, the Sox might have won a few more games. But to ignore the fact that -- forget about Ellsbury or Cameron -- Youk missed two months and Pedroia missed three months is just showing his own stupidity.

Why on earth would red sox Management llet him participate in the AllStar Home Run Hitting Contest with a surgically repaired shoulder. How about the Red Sox Medical Staff. Is this nuts or what. Now his shoulder is bothering him after taking about 100 swings in that stupid contest.

In Response to Re: Game Thread 9/19 Orioles v. Red Sox Game 1:
The ailing shoulder could force him to do things he wouldn't normally do - especially if he is in great pain. I still don't get the point of the medical exam prior to the trade; Gonzo failed the exam yet the trade still went though........
