Re: Gamethread Tuesday Red Sox at Cincinnati

Notes: After a day off, the Sox start a two-game series against the Reds. … The Sox beat the Reds twice in May at Fenway Park and lead the all-time series 7-1 (discounting the 1975 World Series). … The Sox are 3-3 on their road trip. … With a win today the Red Sox will have won consecutive games for the first time since July 20-21. … Kelly is making his second start for the Sox. He held his former team, the Cardinals, to one run over six innings last week. Kelly is 2-0, 1.64 in three career appearances against the Reds, one of them a start. … Latos faced the Sox once, in 2011. He allowed four runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings. … Brock Holt has hit safely in five straight and eight of nine. … Dustin Pedroia is 23 of his last 63 (.365). … The Sox have scored 17 runs on the road trip, hitting only .150 as a team (39 of 226) with 57 strikeouts. But their pitchers have allowed only 17 runs and have an ERA of 2.51. … Xander Bogaerts is 3 of his last 35 and Jackie Bradley Jr. hitless in his last 35 at-bats with 18 strikeouts.

Run production was my concern before the start of the season...posted about it many time... It hurts that my fears came true

How does putting Holt in CF accomplish any long range plans for the SOX? Folks, if you're hoping  to see the SOX rebuild for next year, Farrell is definitely the wrong guy to be leading this team. Oh well, no skin off my nose.

Joe Kelly appeared to be a guy who outperforms his peripherals so a start like this should be natural, hopefully he can settle in.  But even when he's not given up a ton of runs his command looks shaky.

Watching Middlebrooks try to hit the baseball is just plain painful. I wouldn't mind if he were released soon and someone else brought up. Just awful.

How is putting anyone on the Red Sox roster in CF going to accomplish any long range plans for the Sox?

Middlebrooks TAKES (AS IN LOOKS AT A GROVED STRAIGHT FASTBALL RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE) strike 1.

Of course he goes down to WATCH strike 3 on a curveball.

WATCHING, WITHOUT ANY INTENTION OF SWINGING, strike 1, has become an all too recurrent theme of this anemic

    Non-hitting team.

This "seeing what they're gonna give ya" philosophy is killing this team!

Cespedes is not that good. His OBP is horrible, and he has a lot of trouble vs RHP.

Ortiz has been the biggest disappointment since Cespedes arrived. He said how much it would help him with Cespedes in the lineup behind him. He leaves Kelly on third after Kelly got a hit and stole third to get in scoring position.  He is 1 hit in his last 17 at bats. Glad he got his wish and has another bat behind him and he is done nothing with it.

Pumpsie, there's a whole lot of players in MLB who aren't that good. Hell, the SOX don't have a monopoly on that. That being said, even players like CES are expensive and that's the major problem with baseball. The few, and I do mean few, really good players are pretty much untouchable.

When people say that 40 is the new 50, I say good is the new mediocre.

It accomplishes absolutely nothing. If they are not going to play JBJ..then send him back down to Pawtucket. Of course..he is the best defensive C.F. in the AL at the moment...so even that would look foolish..lol

Holt has established himself as a super utility guy and he should have a spot next year in that role, not as a starter.  That being said, he should not be starting now if the Sox are serious about looking at guys for next year.  I'd like to see JBJ in the lineup just to see if he can get a hit in these last six weeks.

proper sacrificing technique simply shouldn't be so rare. it's not that hard to do. that Bradley sucks at it is unforgivable and maddening. he (and almost every hitter) should be forced to become a good bunter. there is no excuse to suck at it.
