Other notes: The Red Sox return to Busch Stadium for the first time since winning Game 5 of the World Series, 3-1, behind a dominant effort by Jon Lester (7.2 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts). David Ross drove in the winning run in the seventh inning. Now the last-place Red Sox are a shell of that team, having lost 10 of 12. … The Cardinals start the day one game out in the NL Central and in possession of the second wild card. They have won two straight and three of four. … Lynn is facing the Red Sox for the first time in the regular season but did pitch against them twice in the Series. He started Game 4 and allowed three runs on three hits over 5.2 innings. He then came in relief during Game 6 and did not retire any batters, allowing two hits and a walk. Lynn had a 1.71 ERA in five starts in July. … The Red Sox are 19-32 against AL East teams, 30-30 otherwise. … Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitless in his last 24 at-bats with 12 strikeouts. … Xander Bogaerts is 1 of his last 12. … Lefty reliever Craig Breslow has allowed three runs on six hits (two of them home runs) in his last three appearances. … Daniel Nava is hitting .333 with a .397 OBP since July 1. … Christian Vazquez has reached base via hit or walk in 11 of his 13 starts.

Stat of the Day: There were 48 players who appeared in at least one game for the Red Sox in 2013. Only 22 remain in the organization as of today.

Road woes for Rubby: De La Rosa is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA in five starts at Fenway Park, 0-3, 6.04 in four starts on the road. He is facing the Cardinals for the first time in his career. De La Rosa has not had an at-bat since 2011 but he was 3 for 14 with a walk and only one strikeout that season. Maybe he should hit sixth or seventh.

One for the history books: David Ortiz as 457 home runs, tied for 35th all-time with Adam Dunn of the White Sox. He has 1,511 RBIs, 52nd all-time and one behind Carlos Delgado. He has 541 doubles, good for 31st all-time and one behind Harry Heilmann. Ortiz’s next home run will give him 400 with the Red Sox. Only Ted Williams (521) and Carl Yastrzemski (452) had more.

Heating up: Dustin Pedroia is 10 of his last 22 with four runs scored and five RBIs in the last five games. That has raised his batting average from .272 to .281 and his OPS from .704 to .725

No doubt Bil and Bill. In addition Mookie or the kid Brown, a LH bat--but we get Mr. Nava and Mr. Bogaerts.

Could easily have been Holt at SS, Mookie in RF and Brown in CF. Scary to think JF may be here for another year.

J-BAY, do you say purchased because it is Brown's initial callup or does it connote something else ?

And why would they let Middlebrooks play? AND MOOKIE SIT? This is not just frustrating and mysterious, it borders on the question of why John Farrell doesn't just give it up! Is he trying to show his independence, or maybe he just doesn't have a clue what to do with this team. At least he should be made to explain himself. Or, are these beat writers too patronizing?

Nava is the one who shouldn't be playing. He's a nice story, but he's nothing more than a fourth OF, backup 1B, and to me, Holt is a supersub. He doesn't have the power to be a starting 3B.

Bradley should be CF and Mookie should be in RF.

Concur.  hard to imagine a scenario where Nava fits into next year's plan.

They should actively shop him to a contender looking for OF help now.

Middlebrooks plays because its do or die time for his career, and certainly his tenure as a Red Sox.  Betts sits because one of the reasonsfor a 21 year old's cup o coffee, hand in hand with getting some major league at bats, is to watch and learn.  Betts is not competing for a job or even a place on the 2015 roster.

Perhaps. But I would play these players in this order:

    Bogaerts

    Middlebrooks

    Bradley

    Betts

    Holt

    Nava

Love Nava , hope he stays but we know his gamw, not great power or speed.  Good fill in for injuries and pinch hitting or right-left thing

Brown was signed to a minor league deal before the 2014 after spending the previous three seasons with the Washington Nationals organization. After getting a long look in Spring Training he has been with Pawtucket all year, ranking second among all Red Sox minor leaguers with 16 home runs. Brown brings versatility to the Red Sox outfield. While he has primarily appeared in center field for the PawSox, he has also seen 31 games in right field, and has experience in left field in previous seasons. Taken by the Oakland Athletics as a supplemental first rounder in the 2007 draft, Brown reached the majors with the Nationals in 2011. In 36 games from 2011 to 2013, he was 7 for 40 with two home runs.

I would have called up Brentz instead of Brown. Brown will never be anything as he's a 29 year old career minor leaguer. I'd at least see what Brentz could do since he just got back from the DL.
