Gardner requests $3.2 mil. and EE offers $2.4 mil. Why is Steinbrennner so CHEAP?

Brett Gardner requested $3.2 million and was offered $2.4 million from the Yankees when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
Gardner, who is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, batted .259/.345/.369 with seven home runs, 36 RBI, 87 runs scored and a .731 OPS while tying Coco Crisp for the American League lead with 49 stolen bases. We doubt the two sides will have much trouble finding a satisfactory agreement. Jan. 17 - 7:08 pm et

I also have to wonder why the arbitrer's assessed market value is so different than that of Ellsbury? It seems like the BDC forum had the situation reversed but then the NYY trolls whether open or closeted seem to dominate the forum but that is understandable since the trolls have won the Internet game here. The good red Sox posters have approached the forum and left in disgust. Hats off to the trolls. Harness would be proud of the free speech.

Too funny.  The comp that the Yankees are using is actually Ellsbury.  They're offering the same contract Ells played for in his first year of arb.

Please study up on the arbitration process.

There is no "arbiter's assessed market value" at this point or at any point in the process. Each side has merely submitted its figure to the arbitrator. If the sides don't negotiate a settlement, the arbitrator chooses one side's figure or the other side's figure ... the arbitrator does not choose a market value.

Brett Gardner is in his first year of arbitration while Jacoby Ellsbury is in his second year of arbitration. Last year in the first year of arbitration, the Red Sox and Ellsbury settled on a 2011 salary of $2.4 million ($2.5 million with incentives), almost identical to the $2.5 million salary Michael Bourn earned the previous offseason in his first year of arbitration.

Agreed traven. This post is stupid. The Yankees could pay Gardner minimum wage and most of us could care less.

I think this is true to a certain extent in regard to Hal.  However, George never had to deal with the changes to the luxury tax that are upcoming, if a team goes over even by a litte bit and has done so multiple time the tax will be very heavy and cost teams a lot of money.  This Pineda deal along with the youngster Campos was an effort to have young pitching in order to go out and spend money on position players.  I think revenue sharing has worked and the new luxury tax levels the playing field even more.
