This is the 4th thread you've started about Gomes.  Are you adding some new insight that you forgot to add in all your other Gomes theads?  You know, you're allowed to go back to your other 3 Gomes threads and add a new reply.

    Re: Gomes

Gomes has been one of MLB's best hitters vs LHPs over recent years. Our OPS vs LHPs is over a hundred points lower than vs RHPs. Giving up on one of our potentially best hitters vs LHPs after a quarter of a season where he has seen sporadic duty is not logical.

I think he fits into the "cast of characters" thing the sox have going on now.  Not quite the "1diots" ( and no team ever will be) but they do remind me of that a bit.  Gomes and his beard and helmet tugging are part of it.  Maybe he heats up with the weather?

ya but see thats part of the problem, gomes is best as a part time player, a platoon hitter who faces lefties only is when he is most effective. the sox are trying to make him into a full time starter and his inability to hit righties has been exposed and as a result he has struggled. (mind you he hasnt been hitting anyone this year). its essentially mike cameron 2.0 to a different degree. the sox are trying to market a player as something he is not. gomes was plan b, the sox were waiting to see if the price was going to come down on hamilton to the point where they would feel comfortable making him an offer. that never happened and thus the sox signed gomes for twice what he is worth and have tried to pitch him as an underated guy but in reality everyone knows what gomes is. hes not a starter, as i said before, he is a platoon hitter/4th outfielder, thats his niche and thats all he will ever be. theres a reason why he is hitting .183 and has more k's than hits. the sox outfield right now is a mess to say the least. gomes has been useless, ellsbury is still struggling at the plate, victorino has been better than expected but has run into some injury problems that seem to be lingering.

Yeah, that's the part I don't understand.  He's never hit righties.  Okay, $5M is a lot for someone that 'should' have 225-250 ABs.  But why does he have 34 ABs v righties?  There is not much reason to think he's a better option against righties than Carp is, and virtually no reason to think he'd be better than Nava against righties.

Nava has to play 100% of the games started by righties, whether it is to rest Vic, or platoon Gomes.

They're paying Gomes a lot more money than they're paying Nava and we've seen the past few years with our front office, money trumps talent when it comes to who plays.  Gomes should be an animal for us against lefties, like tonight when we face Diamond of he Twins, but so far he hasn't hit southpaws well at all and hasn't hit righties at all.  It is about time he got off the dime and started producing.  He is supposed to be a good guy to have around and that's all well and good because we need a good and unified clubhouse but we need production on the field more and so far with Gomes we're not getting it any more than we're getting it from the papoose out in center field.
