    Gonzo for Mauer, why not?

They both seem to need a change of scenery, although it really is way too early to write off A-Gon.  Still, the Sox are in the toilet so there is nothing else to do.   Mauer could be the Sox first baseman.  A-Gon could be the Twins firstbaseman and Morneau (forever injured) could DH when healthy.  Sometimes when you trade overpriced vets for each other, it lights a fire under them...what the heck!  It's more realistic than the salary dumps I see posted on here.

Gonzo would need some kind of assurance that Minnesota would allow him to sleep during games

Joe Mauer is unlikely to waive his no-trade protection to leave his hometown where he is revered to join a struggling team whose fans torture its players.

Uh yeah that is exactly what we need, another big contract that is good for 15 homers a year... just like Crawford. Do any of you that come up with these ideas ever think about what you are saying?

He averages 15 homers, 38 doubles, and 89 ribbies and he has never played more than 146 games in a season.... AGon 31 homers, 37 doubles, 102 ribbies along with an ops. of .885 (.872 for Mauer), oh and he plays nearly every game year in and year out.

MAUER's CONTRACT IS BIGGER THAN AGONS! They both expire in 2018 with Mauer at 184 million to AGons 154 million.

Where has Mauer ever kicked AGon's rear in any stat category?

If a "fire were lit" as you say under both players feet than AGON would be playing 160 games a year in Minn hitting 31 homers and driving in 110 runs while Mauer would be in BOS playing 140 games a year with around 15 homers.

What sort of "fire" do you desire?

OK, let's trade one of the best first basemen in the game for an aging catcher who is average at best (with one good year). Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

Re: Gonzo for Mauer, why not?

I did say that it is too early to write off A-Gon, but when the Sox were at the top of their game at the start of the century, they were winning with guys like Mueller, Nixon, Varitek, Lowell, Millar, etc.  Their stats did not jump off the page at you.  The Sox payroll was not quite through the roof either. One of the joys of besting the Yanks in those years was the feeling of being an underdog against them (though not exactly accurate).  Maybe Joe Mauer isn't the perfect fit (by the way, he is younger than A-Gon, tyer), but this team does not have the character nor the characters to win anymore.

OK, so how about this one...Mauer and Morneau for A-Gon, Salty, and Aviles.  Bring up Iglesias to play SS, put Mauer at C, hope Morneau stays healthy, let Papi go at the end of the year, have Mauer and Morneau share DH and 1B next year while Laverney (spelling, I know!) plays C and is part of the DH mix.

What the heck.  Let's do it!

Well, if you throw in Pedroia and $100,000,000 the Twins might go for it. Why do people dream up these miracles, and waste this space?

bosoxmal, you responded, adding to the wasted space.  Maybe A-Gon, Salty, Aviles, and Bucholtz for Mauer and Morneau???

Re: Gonzo for Mauer, why not?

Agon contended for the batting title last year.  He has more power, a higher average and is a better defensive first baseman.  Neither have any speed (Mauer has lost his speed).  Why not?  Because Gonzo is a far superior player.

The thing that has been missing from recent Sox teams that they had in the "glory" years is team chemistry.  Instead they have a revolving door each year as they raid the FA market and add prima donnas instead of dirt dogs.

I think the difference is that in 2004 and 2007 we had elite middle of the lineup bats (Papi, Manny) and elite top of the rotation pitchers (Pedro, Schilling...Beckett, Schilling)

Do we have top of the rottaion pitchers?  Do we have elite middle of the lineup bats?

The problem isnt a lack of passion/chemistry, blah,blah,blah...The problem is a lack of talent.

Look at the Tigers lineup then look at yours.
