Re: Gordon Edes: Why Youkilis has to go

It certainly is an issue. With Middelbrooks clearly so good and DH and 1B taken, Youk is the odd man out. Unfortunately, his injury/health history affects his market value.

Agree with EDES, but the trade may not happen since Middlebrook is having hamstring problem.

Guess Youkilis will stay on the team until Middlebrook get 100% healthy!!

Edes is such a weenie. I said to trade Youk, even though I like him, before the season started. I said Middlebrooks should be on active roster, with Lavarnway and Iglesias. I also said to send Salty to AAA with his last option.

    Another article stating the obvious.

The problem is, who wants a beat up 3rd baseman who can't stay on the field?

Let Youk get 100% healthy.  Then package him with a lower cost player that a team actually wants (Aviles anyone?).  Or wait until Dice K gets back and package the 2.

While Youk should be traded as soon as he plays well for a few games, Ellsbury is the guy to trade after he plays well for a few games.

Why everyone want to trade Ellsbury?  Since he went on DL, Boston fell apart.

This team need Ellsbury more than the team need Byrd or Dmac or Ross or soon to be healthy Kalish or Sweetney in the CF.

If you look at these FA's for cf next year, they are all terrible.  Josh Hamilton may be the only talent CF on the market, but he is already often injure proned player. He is a better fit at LF, but too bad Boston already have Crawford.

To trade Youk , they are going to have to be willing to eat most of his salary. Not sure if they are. Money has suddenly become an issue with this team. It all comes back to the bad contracts.

Perhaps a restructuring of the CBA is in order. State that if a player goes on the DL for longer than 15 days or more than twice in a season, it nullifies the current contract and the player can be traded or released without compensation. Or, while on the DL, a player only can make the league minimum, kind of like being on unemployment.

I'm all for trading Youk.  Hasn't Youk played some outfield for the Sox??  Why not put him in left and keep Middlebrooks at 3rd??

Crazy talk. You don't trade Ellsbury. You sign him to a deal. Otherwise they would need to find another centerfielder, a guy with speed and some power. No.

Did you overlook who posted that?  Not "everyone" wants to trade Ellsbury.  Only one SC, and he's been beating that drum for over a year now while Ells was piling up HOFesque numbers last year.
That SC needs to recognize that he has no credibility here and should go outside, dig a hole, crawl into it, and pull the hole in after him!

We're not going to get much for youk, but if we can save a couple of million, get a prospect, and let Middlebrooks play, we'll be better off.

Are we really ready to make Will "IRON MAN" Middlebrooks the everyday Thirdbaseman?  Old-Man Will seems capable of pulling a hammy just pulling up his stirrups...

Re: Gordon Edes: Why Youkilis has to go

You know why not at least consider trading Adrian instead?  If he's such a great value certainly we can trade him away for a team's top prospect.  The Cubs given they don't have a big time 1B, are lacking offense, and he's Theo's boy plus they have some $ for him.

Then slide Youk back over to 1B and Will "IRON MAN" Middlebrooks is your 3B.  Then, you maybe have your 5th starter in the rotation with the prospect you traded for.......And now you have saved a TON of $....and can EASILY sign Ellsbury to a big extension (7 years/147 million or "a tick more than Crawford")....

It at least needs to be explored...

You know, I kind of agree with that, and it's not because of AG's slump right now.  When he was signed I thought that if it didn't work out we'd NEVER get rid of him but given the current market value for a power hitting first baseman there might be someone there who'd take him on.

Do you know who else might like that idea?  Lars Anderson!  :-)  My point there being that prior to the pickup of AG the Sox felt they had their 1B of the future in Anderson and he's still languishing in the minors.

Yes, it would be a Nomar-esque trade and one that would take kahoonies of steel to pull off, but I can see the advantages of it.

Youk is going to go. It being worked on as we speak. Trying to put together Youk and 2 or 3 others for a quality pitcher. Sox ready to eat 1/2 of Youk's salary. I think the other two are Aviles and Beckett. We will have to eat 1/3 of Beckett money. Want a #1 or #1 starter. The other posible add on is Salty. Then we bring up Iggy and Lavaman.MacDonald goes soon as well.

Why everyone want to trade Ellsbury?  Since he went on DL, Boston fell apart.

The Red Sox were 1-5 with Ellsbury, who had the following numbers:

    BA .192
    OBP .300
    SLG .269
    Zero Stolen Bases

After Ellsbury had another boo-boo season, the Red Sox are 11-12 without Ellsbury.

I'd say, if Ellsbury ever returns and puts up good numbers for a few weeks, get on the cell phone and start sending text messages that the trade bidding for Ellsbury is officially open season!

Uhh...Maybe it's because he's a Scott Boros client and once his contract is up, he's going to demand somewhere in the neighborhood of 7/$150.

If I did anything I'd put Youk in left field-NOT Middlebrooks.  Youk has played a time or 2 in left, he can't take the beating of 3rd base.  See what he can do in the outfield.
