Holy Crap Resign Aceves And Give Him A Chance To Start

IMHO the guy would have won at least 15 games this year and been one of the best number 3's in the league..  we would be playing in the playoffs Friday with a decent chance to make the Series.. so next season give this guy every chance to show his stuff as a starter which as we all know was the main weak part of the Red Sox's downfall this September and season.. a cheap and easy fix right in front of us to a huge probelm if management would see what everyone else sees.. starting pitching..
the guy can throw many innings and still hold the opposition to a low number of runs.. isn't that what it's all about?.. the guy comes in and tosses 3 or 4 innings every other day and what is his ERA?

Posted by gopats1976[/QUOTE]yep.. LOL compare his abilities to Lackey.. LMAO... just think about the money the Sox could spend on relievers if they paid Aceves say 8 million to win 15 games or more.. Beckett, Lester, Buchholz, Aceves and buy the 5th guy if you traded Lackey or put him in the pen.. I really don't care what you do with Lackey after the other 4.. bye bye Wakefield.. it's about winning the World Series not maybe making the playoffs

Aceves would probably be a good starter.  The Red Sox would have to find someone else to replace him in the bullpen.  Definitely would be a great solution to their pitching situation

Aceves as Closer...he has the mentality of a closer, maybe more so than Pap and Bard. He let's very little bother him. He's like a kid playing a little league game.
He needs an incentive laden contract where he can make as much as he wants.

Let Pap walk as a free agent get two picks.

His velocity was certainly up. The biggest mistake the Yanks made was letting him go.

Is he eligible to be a Free Agent this year? If yes, there will be a number of bidders out there for his services.

Yes Aceves is a FA this year, but should still be able to be signed at small dollars. I agree to give him his shot in the rotation. I also beleive that they need to start grooming Bard as a starter. If they dont beleive he is going to become a big time closer then his talent is being wasted as a 7th and 8th inning guy. Bullpens are re-built every year. Almost all of their current bullpen arms are FA this year so they need to go out and put together a new bullpen with low dollar guys. They need to work with Bard on his secondary pitches and throwing strikes more consistantly.

According to MLB Trade Rumors he is not a free agent---he may be arbitration eligible.

The Yankees let him go because his back has been an issue in the past.  And, it isn't like letting him go left a huge hole in the BP  The Yankee BP is one of their strong points this season.  Would it have been smarter to resign him rather than  signing Soriano, yeah but it didn't hurt letting him go.  And, if he gets as far as FA the Yankees might go after him again.

As for making him a starter, that could be problemtic.  As stated he's had reoccurring back issues and a starters role might be too much on him.

Aceves is a good pitcher, in the right role.

Aceves also broke his collar bone in a biking accident during the winter which probably factored into their decision.

The Soriano signing was pure Hank and Hal and would have happened even if they had re-signed Aceves.  I doubt there is a Yankee fan out there that wouldn't swap Soriano for Aceves straight up in a heartbeat.
