Not only does Boston want Tim Hudson, sources say it's mutual. Tight with David Ross, other Sox. Hudson wants a ring.

Just to clarify for fans unduly upset: Drew, Ellsbury and Napoli can still negotiate with #RedSox. Solid chance Napoli comes back at least

Middlebrooks Doubront Dempster Workman and Iglesias for Scherzer, and they already have Iglesias. Smile  No but really, Buch Lester Scherzer Lackey Peavy, sounds great!  What's that, 2 #1s 2 #2 and a 3 more or less?  How old is Scherzer?

Re: Hot Stove League Discussion Thread

Detroit would probably try to avoid trading Scherzer to a top competitor like the Sox, but if we offered better than anyone else, they would probably have to say yes.

The Tigers are losing Peralta (SS/LF), and Infante (2B) to free agency and have a big need at LF and their bullpen. They Have Iggy to play SS, so their biggest need would be to replace Scherzer (SP), Infante (2B), Dirks (LF) and Closer.

The Sox could offer Peavy, but they'd probably want Doubront.  Betts is a good 2B prospect, but is not ready for 2014 MLB. We could trade Nava, Carp or Gomes to play LF for the Tigers. We could give them some pen help, but not a closer, maybe Britton, Miller or Morales and Tazawa or Workman.

My guess is, it will take more than Doubront, Nava, Morales, Miller and Betts to land Scherzer.

    Charlie Wilmoth:

    • The Red Sox have not begun discussing an extension with starting pitcher Jon Lester, but they appear likely to do so near the start of spring training, Bradford writes. If the Red Sox do sign Lester to an extension, they will likely wait until after Opening Day to complete it, since his current contract only counts $9.4MM per season against the 2014 luxury tax. The average annual value of an extension would likely be far greater.

    • Carlos Ruiz might be a good fit with the Red Soxsuggests FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Rosenthal hears that one team has already offered Ruiz somewhere in the vicinity of two years and $20MM, and he thinks that team could be the Red Sox. By signing Ruiz rather than Brian McCann or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Boston would avoid committing to a contract of more than two years. Signing a catcher for three years or more might not be ideal, with prospects Blake Swihart and/or Christian Vazquezpotentially ready to help in the next couple years.

This is what I'm hoping for. Salty has clearly fallen out of favor to some extent, and the rumored 6/90 for McCann is crazy.

$10 x 2 is too much, but I guess at today's rates, it's about what it will take.

I know nothing about his defense, except that his CS% was 25% in 2013 and 4 PBs/23 WPs is not bad for 745 innings.

    From 2011-2013, he's 13th in innings caught.

15th in lowest PBs, but 2nd in lowest WPs.

24th in lowest SBs against, but 8th in most CS.
