Seems like the Sox should have made clear to the Cubs what would be required in terms of compensation before they let them talk to Theo. If the talks break down because Chicago isn't willing to pay up, where do you go from here? Would management force Theo to stay for 2012, even though he clearly wants to go elsewhere? That would make for one awkward season...

Did you really expect the RS to come in a ask for player A and the Cubs to say OK. Or did you expect the RS to just take what the Cubs offered.
It is NEGOTIATIONS. I've been there NO one ever takes the first offer from either side.

If no compensation can be agreed upon you may see MLB step in.
We may see MLB step in because they don't like the money or compensation for Theo.
You may see Theo sit out a year and be paid by the RS.
You will not see Theo as RS GM again or in the FO at anytime.

If no agreement by Monday then worry.

We don't know yet what will happen - but if the Sox continues to make headaches for us I will certainly not hesitate to bad mouth them, really tired of this team right now (and this is the first time in my life I have ever said that).

We are no longer innocent thanks to Manny cheating and Ortiz under suspicion, since we followed the Yankees and signed players to insane contracts, and since what seems apparent the front office leaked about Tito's peronal issues.

His personal issues were not leaked. Every one knew he took meds for his knees that he had many operations on them and had both replaced. He had moved out of his home and was living in a hotel.
How can you say it was leaked.
They all knew what was going on and decided not to report the seperation.
But now they have and by innuendo made the meds he took part of the story.

Just like the story that came out just before the Pats playoff game a few years ago this crap about Terry was known and just used to sell the story. Hell he had been taking the meds for all the time he was here we all knew that.

It is a game of chicken right now. The Cubs are all in with Epstein but the flip side is Epstein is all out of Boston.

The Cubs want to just throw some cash at this, the RS want prospects and have some precedent for that request.

Are the Cubs going to walk, I don't think so. Are the Rs going to retain Epstein and have him report to Luccino and Cherington if they can't get a deal to their liking? I don't think so.

Seems nowadays that things don't move fast enough for in any one news cycle to not create crazy speculation. A real downside of the blogosphere I suppose.

Ezactly. It could be the FO's way of making the Theo departure look like it wasn't really their idea. That makes all the Theo lovers ok with it, and the Theo bashers get their wish at the same time.

the sox should get a good prospect back as compensation for the cubs signing theo. the white sox got the marlins #4 and #5 prospects for ozzie guillen. The name i heard is brett jackson. I think the sox should stick to their guns and get a fair return. Though i dont understand how things could have got this far without the two teams agreeing on the compensation. makes no sense

I figure a GM is more valuable than a manager, so the precedent has been set from the Ozzie signing. We should get two top 10 prospects at minimum.

They aren't going to get Brett Jackson.  I'm going to bet they get a pitcher like Trey McNutt and/or LeHair. I'd take a flyer on LeHair as DH. He's 28, but he hit 39 long balls for AAA Iowa.

Well all I have heard is unnamed sources told Hoehler about it, if it was known to everyone than why is it a story now? I guess I am not a gossiper or a reader of the Enquirer like JimFromFlorida because I didn't know about the marriage or that he was still on med's.

Also if a quote or claim comes from an unnamed source I consider that a LEAK, sorry if my definition of leak is different than you.

Bryan LaHair is a former failed Mariner prospect who could be the next Mike Morse, a former failed Mariner prospect who had his breakout season this year at age 29 with 31 homeruns, 95 RBI and and .303 batting average for the Washington Nationals. Raul Ibanez was a failed Mariner prospect at age 29 when he had his breakout season with the Kansas City Royals.

Seems the negotiations are not bogged down by players Sox will get, but who Theo gets to take with him. Sox need to keep anyone they feel is an asset...Baird, Hazen etc. It also seems interesting that Theo is not the GM for the Cubs. His title is going to be at a higher level equal to president. So the Cubs in fact will also need a GM. Could I be Cherington? He being named the GM of theCubs is also a promotion for him. Do the Sox bring back Byrnes in any capacity?

    Re: http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/this-just-in/21147476/source-sox-cubs-negotiations-hit-bump

In the end this will be settled just like traffic court...It's not a question of if you'll be paying a fine, but how much.

It's clear that Epstein is going to the Cub's. It appears that Cherington will be the new GM for the Sox and according to reports is taking the lead on negotiating with the Cub's on the "settlement". Neither side wants this deal to fall through. The sooner it's completed the better for both sides...

In the end I doubt that the Sox will settle for a couple of AAA B level prospects only? Our system doesn't need bulk we need quality and if the Cub's don't have anyone in their upper system that's a projectable big leaguer (unlikely). Then they'll probably look at lower level guys (A ball) with upside and or a couple of million in cash...

Remember this is a precendent setting case so whatever they agree too will be subject to approval by Selig. Which adds another layer to the process...
