    I Owe Youkilis An Apology

    Dear Kevin,
I'm sorry I ever challenged your Dirt Dog status in Sox nation.
I just read where your teammate, a DH, could not "play" v. Tampa because
of bursitis in his heel. Upon reading that, I've decided I want 9 of you because I know you will play with a cracked bone, a bad foot, a bad shoulder, and have to be dragged off a field to sit even a few innings.

I'm very sorry for thinking it was best to trade you for high value in the off-season.

I wish more players would actually give more to their teams in terms of hustle, spirit, emotion, and actually playing hurt even if it means it makes your batting average, offensive and defensive numbers slide.

I cannot stand players who won't even attempt to play if their index finger got a pin-hole cut (see JD Drew). David Ortiz, you disappoint me.

Too tough for Ortiz to suck it up for the team. He gets to cheerlead in the dugout for his salary, and just has to get prepared for 4 at bats. Oh, I can't play, I have bursitis in my heel. Oh, poor me, take me out of the lineup....I cannot believe this guy wouldn't play, wouldn't attempt to hit in a doubleheader that means a lot. Just disappointing. I cannot accept this fragile state poor baseball players are in today. Oh, I can't play, I'm hurting. I can't take a cortisone shot, oh no, I can't take some motrin, or play with a heel pad. No I'm hurt, take me out, coach. Awful way to show your team how much you care.

You should have alerted Theo in the off-season that Youk was at his peak value. You were probably also sure that he would start out poorly and only hit .218 in April, May. Alibi Gripe saw that poor start and gave up on him just like how many in RSN gave  up on Papi every May 15th. But then Youk hit .293 in June and .283 in July. The crystal ball did not lie however when Youk hit .216 in August.

I also was sure that Beltre would duplicate his torrid 2010 season in 2011 and should have been given a six year megabucks contract and VMart should have been signed also despite the money. After all, John Henry is loaded and can easily outspend the Steinbrenners, forget about the 40% difference in revenues and the NYC and NYS subsidies of the Stadium. Two chickens in every pot and an all star at every position is my motto. Let's begin the push to entice Yankee's Sabathia to sign here in the winter. Keep Papelbon and Ortiz too, it's only money.

well, they spent 142 mil on Crawford, and 82 mil on Lackey, you're absolutely right it is "only money" for the Red Sox wide-open payroll budget.

Then Tito is a moron, I'm sick of this pamby-mamby way of sitting guys in a pennant race when they are desperately needed. Ortiz not being available v. Tampa pitching is a big hole. How he can't play the 2nd game of the DH is beyond me. And if he is not begging Tito to play, then he's not doing his job. It just is head-shaking. The injuries that Sox players sit out for in some cases are just ridiculous.

Team got 3 hits, thank god for Jacoby, thank god for Lester. Ortiz must play, bursitis is not a reasonable excuse to miss a game as a DH. He should be out there playing..period.

Theo needs one of those experts from Wall St. who always buy at a stock's low and sell at it's high. That way he will always be aware when a player is at his peak value to the other team and they will be more than willing to trade someone of superior value back to the Red Sox. It all sounds so  elementary to me. Even a caveman could do this. The player needed as a replacement is always available and that team will always be eager to unload him for a player of lesser value. A kid's game and I'm surprised that Theo hasn't mastered this yet.

Posted by dannycater[/QUOTE]You got to be kidding, right?

First off you complaining they pulled him from a game they WON. Talk about reverse hindsight.

Second, don't you think back in 2004 Terry and the medical staff did not rewind Schilling's start in Anaheim a thousand times trying to figure out if they should have pulled him sooner before his tendon burst?

The medical staff tends to error to side of occasional recklessness with players health, so when they want to send a player off property "right now" to get an MRI they have a serious concern that the injury could be a an early warning of something more serious.

So while you want to just "wrap em' up, suit em' up and play them like it was 1922" the RS are not morons for being cautious with their 5 slot hitter.

No way Dannycater is a sox fan lol. TWO GAMES TODAY. A bursitis is aggravated by REPTITIVE MOTION and with enough TRUAMA can become CHRONIC. Taking 30 swings in a day, yeah that sounds like truama to a heel and reptitive motion. Problems should be nipped at the bud, I still think if Buch had seen a specialist sooner he might be pitching in September.

I have had bursitis, it is excruciating, and you still play, especially if you DH.

It's a reflection of today. Sit for anything and everything. Just sit. Ask the Hall of Famers of the 1960s,1970s,1980s...they will tell you about playing and playing hurt. It's ok to take one for the team as a DH.

It's the heel, not a shoulder, not a knee, not preventing him from swinging a bat 4 times in a game. It's ok to play hurt once and a while as a DH. It's not exerting as much as you may think. Especially with today's technology in heel inserts, padding.

Major, major differences in what part of the body is hurting. If he has a cracked heel, a bone break, that's a whole different animal. Bursitis of the heel? No way you miss both ends of a doubleheader.

DC- so, you tongue-in0cheek backhand Youk in your 'apology':

I wish more players would actually give more to their teams in terms of hustle, spirit, emotion, and actually playing hurt even if it means it makes your batting average, offensive and defensive numbers slide.

But, then you criticize Ortiz for sitting when he has an injury that would certainly affect the way he performs.

Damd if they do, damd if they don't I guess huh?

I like how you have to seperate all those into different posts, as if they weren't all about the same subject. We're still at a conflict of opinion, you can think an organization being precautionary is "girly" or "sissy" or whatever word your getting at, I'll insist it is smart to have players as healthy as possible in October when it is clear you are going to have a playoff birth.

Actually, no, Space, I hope it didn't come off as a backhand slap because I would rather have a guy who wants to play and will hustle for his team play than not play at all. Youkilis ripped a homer at Seattle, pain or no pain. Ortiz has been ripping the ball at Fenway, and I don't see his "pain" as being so tough that he can't suck it up to bat in a game v. Tampa. I totally understand the medical staff of the Red Sox (cough, cough, every player who ever got put on the Sox DL magically happened when someone else was coming off the DL...why is that?)

Drew is legendary in the ailments that have prevented him from playing. Hurt backs, pulled hamstrings, shoulder damage, hey totally understand. Bursitis in the heel is chronic, but treatable, and playable. I've played on a bad heel, I know. You can still swing out of your derriere and drive a ball, and not get hurt anymore than you are.
