The team wins for a week straight and all the talking heads are just going nuts because if they can't bash the Red Sox, they have nothing to say about the Red Sox.

The team is 10-11, won 6-7, is playing without the starting CF and LF, had to revamp the Bullpen on the fly, and will likely be over .500 at the end of the week.  That is not a "train wreck" to me.  But then I don't need to say stupid things to get ratings, so there is that.......

Train wreck is extreme, but there have been some missteps.

I think Lineup Card-gate was somewhat overblown. Yeah, I can see how it didn't look good, but maybe he simply looked at the material, misread or had a brain-frt -- his eyes read one thing but his brain read another. It happens.

How many of you went to the grocery store and picked the wrong item off the shelf because you misread the label because you're in a hurry.

If it's a consistent problem, it's a big deal. But one time?

I agree there have been some missteps, but picking on Bobby V because he mistakenly thought Liam Hendricks was lefthanded is stupid...and insinuting that maybe it is because of his age is downright insulting.....Bobby hasnt been a MLB Manager in 10 years.....and a good part of that he spent in Japan....its Liam Hendricks for Petes sake....not CC Sabathia......I bet if you asked all the AL beat writers, 1/2 of them who dont cover the twins wouldnt bet thier mortgage on what hamd Liam Hendricks pitches with. He may not be the best Manager for the locker room but Bobby V knows baseball.....and if we win all the Lockerroom stuff will be forgotten.

Yeah, lineup-gate is a bit overblown but he has made some pretty strange moves that should be questioned.  When you add in his continuous foot-in-mouth syndrome, there is sufficient cause for feeling something less than confidence.  I hope he just had a "managers' slump" but to date he has not shown us a level of in-game brilliance that would make up for the predictable BV side show distractions.  It's still early so I am concerned but trying to keep an open mind.

How can any true Sox fan blame BV for a sort of train wreck? The fact is he inherited the old train. The guy knows how to manage. His style reminds  me like of Dick Williams. I guess I may be too loyal, but I believe in BV. I don't believe in Carl, but his spot is covered well by Ross and Byrd and Sweeney. When Els returns all should be well. Cook hs to be called up or we lose him. I don't think he can be in the rotation. In Colorado, I saw him pitch a lot. He does not like the pen. However, we cannot afford to lose him to the team that shall not be named.

Re: I strongly disagree: Felger, Merloni: Valentine's 'been a train wreck'-Your Reaction?

He's made so many mistakes that it's difficult to keep track of.

*Pitched to Fielder instead of Young.
*Had Salty catch Beckett in his first game even though most people know he doesn't like pitching to him.
*Brings in career minor leaguer Thomas in a 2-run game and 1st/2nd and no outs.
*Picks a fight with Youkilis after we beat TB 3 straight.
*Has a 0-0 game, bases loaded with Longoria up.  The only guys warmed up in the BP are Albers and Thomas, our two worst guys.
*Has Aviles sacrificing in the 2nd inning v Blackburn, a guy that cannot get Aviles out.  Aviles winds up with a single, two doubles, a HR, and of course, a sacrifice.
*Didn't prepare enough to know that Hendriks was a righty.  I actually pointed that out in another thread before BV changed it.
    *And let's recap tonight-Buchholz allows a
    Single
    Walk
    Line out
    Hard grounder
    Another walk
    A single
    A HR
Before BV starts thinking maybe Buchholz is done for the night.  You have a 10-run lead, the SP walks two guys, and it doesn't dawn on you that maybe he's lost it?

Sorry, I forgot-allowed out lefty specialist to pitch to 3 of the toughest righties in the league, and predictably, they pounded him.

He took Cody Ross out, I presume because of his leg.

But why would you put DMac in RF, and Lars in LF?  That's terrible defense.  Why not leave DMac in LF and put Sweeney in RF?  Not only is your defense much better, but you would have had a much better hitting matchup in the bottom of the 8th.

Valentine has made some odd moves.  I have to say this, though, the team is starting to look like a motivated team that wants to win, not a team going through the motions.  That was the way they usually looked to me when Tito was manager (motivated, that is).

Re: I strongly disagree: Felger, Merloni: Valentine's 'been a train wreck'-Your Reaction?

Yes Bobby V. has made mistakes, as would be expected when you consider he's been outta the game for 10yrs., is on a new team and league, and has been put into a veritable pressure cooker of a situation. Imagine how you'd feel with the following: He's told that the GM was forced to take him, but wanted someone else. He's harrangued daily by the pro Terry F. forces who somehow blame Bobby's arrival for Terry's departure. Explain all day long that the two are completely separate events, but the illogic defies rebuff. He's faced with the anti Lucchino forces who want a massive failure for the Red Sox this season, so they can scream that "Theo was right-Larry's the screw up hindering us". He walked into a veritable MASH unit already, then watched in horror as Ellsbury, Crawford, and Bailey all suffered serious long term injuries. The man has a lot on his mind people! I do believe he needs to put his big boy pants on like the rest of us, but any fair minded person would have to admit he's been dealt a bad hand. I like much of what he's done, but also acknowledge some of his foibles. Beckett was angry he din't get to choose Salty for his personal catcher? GREAT! Tell his highness to put away his pansy pink panties and become a professional. Bobby sent a message that Josh's prima donna days were a thing of the past. He mishandled the Youk thing....but was also right in his assessment at the time. I think Youk was just stuck in a rut, and Bobby was shaking the tree a bit to cause a reaction. Seems to have worked out. Let's give the man an honest chance to see what he can accomplish this year. If he can change the lousy clubhouse culture, that alone will be a huge improvement. I think he could possibly be a very good manager for us, once he gets fully locked in.

Most of Joebreidys complaints fall into the category of finding out what players, especially in the bullpen are capable of. If Beckett likes Shoppach so much, why did he keep shaking his head in the first inning Sunday when Chicago scored 3, enough to win? Beckett is stupid and stubborn and hardly the last word on catching prowess. I give Bobby V a ton of credit for sorting though a horrendous bullpen to find some semblance of competence and order. Melancon and bailey have bombed, not his fault. Youk looks awful, Ellsbury and CC are out, and he basically is going with a brand new outfield. Train wreck is dead wrong.

These guys are entertainment thats all.  Bobby V had to get to know this team and what they could do.  So he is giving players chances to perform or fail to figure out what he has going forward.  Eveyone this guy can't manage but he was very good over in Japan.  I know its not the major leagues but he was working  and manging players. Everyone knows a change was needed and now the players are actually playing hard and caring again.  Will they be a championship team?  Probably not because of the mess Theo left behind but they can be a very good team and do have a chance to possibly get into the playoffs.  If that happens then its a new season and any team can get hot and win it.  Look at St. Louis last season.

I don't connect the two.  I only comment on what I see.  Instead of complaining that we are being unfair to BV, explain why I am wrong.

Care to explain last night's with Lars?  It was one of the stupidest moves I have ever seen.

On defense, would you rather see-

    A-DMac, Byrd, and Sweeney, or
    B-Lars, Byrd, and DMac?

Seriously, Lars has virtually never played LF in his life, while DMac is semi-passable.  And Sweeney is 10x the RFer that DMac is.

Next, with 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs, who would you rather have at bat?

    A-A guy with a .962 OPS, or
    B-A guy with a .333 OPS?

And to make things worse, he realized his mistake, and sent Sweeney in for Lars in the 9th.  So if he was sending in Sweeney in the 9th, why not have Sweeney bat in the 8th?

I mean, if you Tito out, that's fine.  But trying to defend moves like this really doesn't help.

That doesn't cover it.  If you bring up a guy like Tazawa, maybe you want to see what he has, so you bring him in a game.

Albers and Thomas are known commodities.  And Thomas is a minor leaguer.  When the score is 0-0, bases loaded, and Longoria up, against possibly your primary rival, no sane person brings those two in 'to see what they are capable of'.

Just admit what Fangraphs has already covered-it was a really bad move.
