If we looked at Lance Berkman... why not this guy?

Jim Thome.......I know he's 42....but how old was Berkman?? He'd be a bench guy anyways.

I agree only because certain contributors would have been crying about the money BenC was spending. His legs are bad, he's over the hill, where will he play, we already have a DH--it would have been relentless--we haven't heard their criticism probably because it's been so quiet from Yawkey Way.

Good luck to Berkman and the Rangers-I hope they have a great season.

I thought he was an epically bad signing, but at a cheap enough price, he'd make sense for someone.  For a backup 1B/LF, we need a lefty, imho.

$10M for Berkman is sick, but then again, that's what Youk got too.

But if the Rangers win the World Series and Berkman is the MVP they will be crying that we should have signed him.

I'm thinking Lee would sign very cheap.  He has no interest at this point

$10M for Berkman is sick, but then again, that's what Youk got too.

True, but Youk is also ~3 years younger and, though he missed time with injury and had the worst season of his career overall, he still managed to play in 120+ games and hit 19 home runs.

Big difference from Berkman, who will be 37 and played in 30-something games. Spending that money on Youk was excessive, but on Berkman it's just nuts.

Well, I'm glad that we didn't sign Berkman. Does anyone agree?

Aye. If Cherington had spent $10 million on Berkman he'd be getting verbally hanged, drawn, and quartered on this board and elsewhere (though, as devildavid said, someone will play the hindsight game if he goes on to have a good year and will pretend they were for it all along).

They finally got it done, Drew, 48/50 game season. Good to finally see them practacing on ice yesterday, at BU. May be the shortest training camp on record. Assume we'll be losing you to the Bruins board, for a while.
