He and Bill Plummer (Johnny Bench's backup) were the best backup catchers in the 1970s.

That's got to mean something, right?

    Tongue out

He should go in if for no other reason he was the last regular ML hitter to NOT wear a batting helmet!  He wore a cap reinforced with steel!  He had no ear flaps so he was vulnerable if a pitch hit the side of his head!  I'm not sure if it was ballsy or stupid!

Don Zimmer had a head reinforced with steel.

Came in handy when he charged Pedro like a wild rhinoceros on crack!

I'm still not sure if that was "ballsy or stupid" either!

Re: Is Bob Montgomery a Hall of Famer?

Very affable man whom I once got to meet.  But no Hall of Fame as a broadcaster either because of his lack of creativity in using nicknames.  He simple added an "y" to names like his, making Montgomery "Monty."  The worst one was calling Bruce Hurst "Hursty."

As a player, he was the perfect backup for Fisk like Mirabelli was for Varitek.  Fisk rarely sat, so Montgomery wasn't exposed long enough to show his limitations.  He seemed to always have a big game on one end of double-headers at Fenway where he grooved his Monstah stroke.

    387 career games....

    156 RBI.

    23 HOMERUNS.

    .258 CAREER BATTING AVERAGE.

    ...AND HE STOLE 6 BASES!!!

Actually, not bad for a backup catcher.

That's one first....what is the other you refer to?

When I was a kid Fisk was my favorite.  I remember 2 years in a row going to see my one game a year in Fenway with my dad and Monty was playing instead of Fisk.  ugh.

Monty was one of those guys that wouldn't kill you if you played him, he could fill in even if he wasn't great. That got me to thinking of other guys like that. Bob Watson. Cecil Cooper. Don Baylor. Tom Brunansky. Kevin Millar. Then there were the guys you can't stand. Julio Lugo. Larry Wolfe. Carlos Quintana.

Yeah. He's a good guy who loved fan interaction.
He never minded not playing much. In fact, he often preferred it that way.
He did a much better job catching Lee than Fisk did. Monty was flexible.
