Jete isn't one of the top five defensive SS's of all time but certainly one of the Yankees.  He did however play very good defense and offensively was always one on the best in the game so my answer would be.

Yes, Top 5 Yankee SS of all time

Yes, Best Yankee SS of all time

Yes, Top 5 Yankee of all time

HOF SS without a doubt overall!

I basically agree with most of the order that everyone is saying.                                                     1.Ruth 2. Gehrig 3. Mantle. 4 Dimag 5 Either Yogi or Jeter. I have Mantle slightly over Joe D, because the offense was a little better and his defense was also even though he played in pain from that freak injury when he stepped on the drain in the outfield. Joe D retired kind of young at 35 I think. Had it not been for WW2 those stats would have been close to or more then 500 HR's and an average of 100 rbi's a year.  Mattingly should be top ten Yankee but he's discriminated against because he didn't win the WS and only one playoff appearance. Remember he played only two years with the wild card and one year was a strike. I rate him over Reggie Jackson who only played 5 seasons with the Yanks compared to Donnie Baseball's 14. Dave Winfield also over Reggie. If Don's not top ten at least top 15

Agree. My top five Yankees -- and I haven't looked at anyone else' list:

1. Babe Ruth
2. Gehrig
3. DiMaggio
4. Mangle
5. Berra.

This list should be a no-brainer.

As for the next five, Jeter, Rivera and Whitey Ford should lead the way -- maybe in that order, but you could also flip them around.

Top five SS:

1. Honus Wagner
2. Ernie Banks
3. Cal Ripken Jr.
4. Derek Jeter
5T. Luis Aparicio, Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel.
I agree with your top 8 Yankees. Although might flip Mantle and Dimaggio.

My top SS list would be different......

1-Honus Wagner

2-Cal Ripken

3-Arky Vaughn

4-Luke Appling

5-Ozzie Smith

6-Dereck Jeter

Like others, I am a big believer in SS defense. Also believe in OB%.  Vaughn and Appling rank 1-2 all time. Plus they both missed two years in their prime because of the War.
Not bad. I was thinking about Appling. Forgot about Vaughn. I think Ernie Banks is a no-brainer top five, but it's a good debate.

The main problem ranking Banks at SS is that he actually played more games at 1st base. If we go by whole careers at any position I would have needed to rank ARod.:(

Kind of classless to bring up this point during a Jeter tribute thread on a Red Sox forum. You could stand to be less antagonistic.

ti's pretty good being a Sox fan of late, so your concerns aren't really needed or wanted.

Besides, Nomar WAS better than Jeter. Albeit for about three months.
Responding in kind to snarky remark about Jeter. Equally classless depending on the reader.

What 3 months was Nomar better than Jeter December to February?
So sensitive.
And then you come back with a snarky comment of your own.

Not being able to "come back and gloat, when the Sox get bounced out of the playoffs" must have really sucked for you.

Toughen up, cupcake...

Late last August, here at ESPN.com, we took a poll. It turned out to be just the latest, greatest window into the true legacy of Derek Jeter.

We commissioned our friends at Turnkey Intelligence, one of America's most prominent sports polling firms, to ask people a question that the sport of baseball needs to pay close attention to -- now more than ever:

Who's the Face of Baseball?

Guess who won?

I think the NYY fans in here have missed a name I thought would've been more obvious.  There is very little difference between this guy and Yogi.

'xxx' > AVG

'xxx' > OBP

'xxx' > SLG

'xxx' > OPS

Yogi had about 20% more ABs, but adding those back, a lot of their are pretty close.  And this guy has a WAR/PA that is a fair bit better than Yogi.  And this guy's WAR/PA is way, way higher than Jeter's.

He is the best ss ever for the Yankees.  Not moving over to third was a good non move.  He does not break the top five for the all time Yankee list but is easily in the 6-10 group.
