Beckett was our best pitcher last year.  Youk, injured, but the offensive centerpiece for this club since Manny left.  They are not going anywhere.  And they are not stiffs.  And if you are designating them as such because of some perceived clubhouse negatives, they are trivial compared to what they provide production-wise.

Hey, they re-signed Miller, so if the staff needs an eighth starter because of a back-up of doubleheaders they got their man. Miller also can serve as the lefty garbage time specialist that all teams are looking for, the man can fill two roles which gives the Sox the  roster flexibility that all great teams strive for.

That gut outpitched Felix Hernandez last year.

Beckett's problems last September were  probably more related to trying to come back too son from a sprained ankle than conditioning.  He had the gut all year; the ankle damage was new.

But then, you cannot use those "injury comeback" stories in the media unless they work and the player triumphs.  Making a warrior effort and coming up short leaves no good angle. Would anyone remember the bloody sock if Schilling gave up 8 runs in the first?  How would that have played out?  (Hint: Blame laid elsewhere.)

So the media decided it must have been the chicken and beer...

As I've said...the most intelligent poster here. I doubt anyone would disagree. I may not know as much about baseball as some of the posters here, but I know that.

notin is dead wrong. Like Pedro said in his gesture to his eyes, it was something that was easy to see. Stats do not equate to how bad Beckett actually pitched in 2011. He was no Ace, and he was no leader. You can say he averaged 6.5 innings but the eyes would tell you he barely pitched 5... the eyes do not lie.
