Re: It's almost time for Theo to go shopping for 2012 free agents. Who do you want?

honestly not overly impressed with this years free agent crop. i think going the trade route to get some pitching and a rf is the way to go. The only free agent that interests me at all is prince fielder. If ortiz wants a multi year deal let him walk. Sign Fielder to dh and the gives line up an unparalleled 3/4 punch. youk is not a number 4 hitter, neither is ortiz. I believe that part of the reason why gonzo's power numbers have been down this year is because he has had no line up protection and as a result has not been getting pitches to drive. Yes i know fielder would be an expensive dh, but keep in mind we have been paying ortiz 12.5 plus per year to dh for us. The sox biggest need via trade is pitching. They need a front of the rotation starter as buchholz cannot be counted on and lester has tailed off big time this year. The sox need a strong 1-3 punch in the rotation with buchholz in the 4(where he belongs) and that useless waste of skin known as john lackey.Who we would be able to land is a huge question mark as it is hard to say at this time who may be available, but the guy theo needs to go all in for is felix hernandez. In terms of free agents, the only interesting option are bullpen guys. maybe taking a flyer on a guy like broxton could be a good idea.

Nobody! I don't want another single Theo Epstein free agent signing!
Besides, there isn't one free agent OF on that list worth a damn. Does whoever made this list realize Aaron Hill plays in Arizona, and Lance Berkman re-signed with the Cards?
Hill would be nice insurance if Youk breaks down again. They need to strengthen the bench, too. McDonald, Reddick, Lowrie need to go. Aviles should stay.
Maybe he can make a trade or two for a decent right fielder, who doesn't hit left handed, a backup catcher, and more pitching help.
Does anyone realize that the Astros GAVE Philly cash in the Hunter Pence deal?
    Where the hell was Theo?

Re: It's almost time for Theo to go shopping for 2012 free agents. Who do you want?

We would do better with a random Mystery Shopper than with Theo!

I would seek Chien-Meng Wang of Nats as free agent.  He is really pitching well for Nats and would not cost too much to sign.  I saw him beat the Braves on Sat, and the Braves are in a tight wild-card race in NL.  Wang was outstanding with 7IP and only 1 run allowed.  Had his signature sinker working and got many ground ball outs,  Threw as high as 92 MPH and has 78 on change up.

That said, we need an upgrade at SS - Scutaro has poor range and erratic arm - too mant errrors on touches and too many balls he cab't touch; another Theo bust!  Bring up out kid at Pautucket with the great golve.  We can carry the weak bat.

I want to sign someone who is capable each season of the following:

    150Games  99Runs 29Doubles 14Homers .293BA and 51 Stolen Bases

I would support inking such a player to a 7 year deal, money is of no worry.

I'd take a serious run at C.C. Sabathia if he opts out, a serious run at  him.  Even if that seems unlikely I guess we can at least jack up the price for the Yankees.

Otherwise I would love to see C.J. Wilson

C J Wilson,Roy Oswalt,  Mark Buehrle, Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda.  Wilson is probably the best guy available this offseason(CC Sabathia may use his option to take a stupid expensive contract to absurd levels and I don't see the sox signing him only driving his price up higher for the Yankees who desperately need to hold onto him as he is their bona fide ace).  Wilson will be expensive(18 million per over 5-6 years) but could slot into a solid number 3 spot in this rotation.  The other 4 would be number 4's or 5's but could be had more cheaply, as they are  either older(Jackson is actually  the only guy who is younger at 28 but is nowhere near the pitcher that Wilson is) and have less appeal than someone like Wilson. The fact that he is a lefty and has been very successful against the sox(and the tougher American league in general) bodes well for him regardless of where he signs.

Drew's 14 million is coming off of the books so they could afford Wilson if they want to.  Something tells me that they will go with a cheaper option though.

Just a couple healthy strong starting pitchers (not an injured proned pitcher like Haren), and a new RF (just a short term one) cuz we never know there is a talent OF is going to be ready to play for Boston in 2014 like Montero is probably ready to play in 2012 or 2013.
