If this rumor were to be taken seriously, and i don't know why it would, I would sincerely hope that the Sox brass would ask for a little more than half-decent Derek Holland.

The Sox sent Scout Willis to watch Holland's last start, but she got arrested for trying to buy a beer with a fake ID at the concession stand -

That rumor has been floating around, but there is no way Ben would indicate that "he was strongly considering it." -

If Cherington goes for it, he's dumb. Yes, the Sox need pitching, but they don't need mediocre pitching. Meanwhile, Ellsbury has the potential to have a very good year in 2013. If he does, he will be badly needed by the Sox.

I wouldn't use Ellsbury chip to get a #4-5 starter. Toss in solid prospect (not touching top 5) or two and try to get solid #2 starter. I say aim for Lincecum.

I suspect the Rangers would want more than one year of 29-year-old Jacoby Ellsbury in exchange for up to six reasonably priced years of 26-year-old starter Derek Holland.

Except that Holland stinks. We have enough stinky pitchers on this team. I don't want him here even if he is free. -

Don't be too sure. The Rangers are geared to win now and they may consider rolling the dice with Ellsbury for next year and take the pick if he goes. They can always get another centerfielder for 2014. Ellsbury would help offset the loss if Hamilton goes elsewhere and they will be in on Greinke and a few other pitchers to replace Holland. That said, I see no way the Sox make that deal... -

I suspect the Red Sox would want more than 29-year-old outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury in exchange for five cheap years of 25-year-old starter Felix Doubront. -

Although maybe the Rangers are less thrilled with his 5.34 ERA at home (as opposed to 4.08 on the road), and might have decided Holland is a little more expandable, and the savings over the next 4 (not 6) years could be better served extending Matt Harrison, who is a ltitle more balanced at and away from The Ballpark...

He's not that much older than Doubront, 1 year almost to the day.
Acquring Holland, which I doubt happens to be honest, would free up the Sox to move the cheaper and cost-controlled Doubront in subsequent deals...

It is probably worth noting that Phil Rogers also only ackowledges this as a rumor, and never says the sides are actually in talks.
And I quote verbatim "The Red Sox and the Rangers may have a fit in a rumored trade of Jacoby Ellsbury for Derek Holland. Ellsbury's acquisition would offset the departure of Josh Hamilton, which seems more and more likely. " Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune, 10-20-12
That is the entirety of the text devoted to this. Didn't anyone read the article?

Seanny, you, Joe, Pumpsie and a lot of us seem to have this potential trade for what it would be....a bad scene all around. You don't trade a blue chip player which Ells is when he is healthy for a #4 or 5 starter. That will only weaken our offense and not do that much for our already battered rotation. Besides, it would make us too lefty in the rotation. I just hope this is one case where Cherington is smarter than I think that moron is and passes on it with extreme prejudice, assuming this is more than just a lot of hot air. -

Jacoby Ellsbury is a 29-year-old outfielder who will earn about $10 million next year before becoming a free agent at the end of the 2013 season. Tim Lincecum is a 28-year-old two-time Cy Young Award winner who will earn $22 million next year before entering free agency. The trade could meet each team's specific needs, but the money difference could be a deal-breaker. Additionally, because of the success of the 2012 San Francisco team, the Giants might not share the Red Sox pressing need to make changes.
