    Justin Masterson 5-0, 2.25 ERA

This guy is an early season Cy Young candidate. Victor Martinez is long gone while Masterson is humming with a club friendly contract.

Have to wait and see how the 2 picks do. Since VMart wasn't signed (even though Theo publicly claimed to have wanted VMart back), it's unlikely that the picks end up better than Masterson was as an established MLB capable pitcher.

Still too early to put this down with Gagne, who wasn't needed and had a terrible recent history of injury and dubious productivity.

Love Justin Masterson! But you've got to still make the trade at that time!

Why do I get sucked into a post like this? It seems as though you are posting Masterson's stats to show that it was a dumb trade especially since the player Sox traded for is no longer with the team. Here's the problem... you chose a bad example since it was a great trade. Vmart was excellent for the Sox for his time here and Masterson has been 7-20 (ERA around 4.7) over the past two years. Who cares is Vmart is no longer with the team?!? Sometimes teams will trade for a player for a few months. Quick analogy- this would be like going to a nice restaurant, eating an enjoyable meal, getting in your car and regretting it because you neither have the money nor do you have the food. Just like a delicious steak VMart served his purpose now move on with your life. Of all the things to criticize... good grief.

Materson looks like he has finally developed into a good starter. You wait three years and cherry pick an argument like this?

If you had said three years ago it was a bad trade and you knew if the sox were patient, he would pitching like this, I would be impressed.

As has already been said, the sox got very good production out of V-Mart.

Even if it had been Materson for Gagne, you can't look into the future and tell how things will play out. You can only make your decisions based on the past, but hindsight is 100 percent.

    Great first post.

    12-20  4.24  1.463 WHIP since the trade.

I could cherry pick a one month stretch of VMart' time in Boston and prove what?

He was always good and that is why they tried to get him back. If they had hung on to V Mart it would have been okay. Now both of them are gone and we have nothing to show for it except an over publisized Atlanta Brave prospect, Saltalamachia !

They let VMart go due to his age and lack of being a good overall catcher. They used his money to sign CC and AG and some relievers.

thank you! V-Mart is what, 33 years old? H wanted a long term contract and it was clear he couldn't be a catcher for much longer. He then gets injured this year, so I don't mind this at all. Masterson is a good young pitcher, but he was worth the trade and wouldn't have done anything more special if he stayed on the Sox.
