If you think Rosenthall is the MLB voice of reason, you should probably concentrate on the WNBA instead and work your way up to baseball.

Re: Ken Rosenthal says the Yankees are the team to beat.

The Yankees don't scare me anymore. Their starting pitching won't hold up in the playoffs. Their No. 2-4 starters are unreliable, and some of their hitters are finally showing their age (Posada, Jeter).

They're still a tough team to beat, and any club will need to play at its best to defeat them, but I think they'd fall to the Tigers or Rangers in the first round. Verlander seems possessed and the Rangers are built much like the Yankees, only younger and deeper.

The Red Sox have a decent chance against both teams simply because of the 1-2 combination of Beckett and Lester being superior to the 1-2 of any of the other AL playoff contenders. The 8th-9th inning combo of Bard and Papelbon places the Red Sox in an excellent position as well. Frontline pitching at the front end and back end tend to determine the outcome of most post-season series.

The Red Sox and Yankees are both lucky that the Angels seem to be falling out of the race in the West. A 1-2-3 of Weaver, Haren and Santana would be formidable.

Definitely, Yankees are awesome.  Oh wait ... didn't they lose all those games to the Sox??

Isn't their best pitcher CC 0-4 against the Sox?

Yeah ... good call.   Ken is always right.  You guys should bet your house on what he says.  Everything you own on the Yankees.

You know, on paper right now, he's probably right. They have a tremendous relief corp and their starters have put up great numbers. The run differential numbers for the Yanks are much better than for the Sox last I looked and we have a #3 starter by commitee approach going on right now plus a ton of injuries.

I like our head to head match up though. The best thing about this team is our matchup with the yanks.

Re: Ken Rosenthal says the Yankees are the team to beat.

Beckett is having a career year statistically and he has not pitched well in the postseason since 2007.  He and John Lackey have almost identical postseason numbers and their career ERA's against the Yankees are shall we say mediocre.  Lester is an outstanding starting pitcher, but he certainly does not have the credentials or resume yet of guys like Haladay, Lee, Sabathia and Verlander.  He's clearly an ace as much as those guys, but he is not quite at their level at this stage of his career.  Anything of course can and does happen in the postseason grind of trying to win 11 games and more often than not the best team as objectively and correctly characterized by Rosenthal (not rocket science to look at the numbers and draw that conclusion) loses much more often than they win in the postseason.  Luck trumps talent just about every time in the wildcard era.  A great example of the preceding statement was the Atlanta Braves of the mid-90's to the mid 2000's.  They had great starting pitching (Hall of Famers), a good offense and a strong defense.  It only resulted in one "lucky" championship.  Today, baseball is clearly much more about entertainment and making money than it is about legitimate competition.  Enjoy it for what it really is and knowledgeable fans understand and recognize that baseball championships do not mean nearly as much as they did 20 years ago.
In Response to Re: Ken Rosenthal says the Yankees are the team to beat. :   In the spring it was "they have no starting pitching- Colon and Garcia ? Hahahaha...." In April, it was "their starting pitching won't hold up 'til the all-star break". Then it was it wouldn't hold up in the dog days of August. Now it's "won't hold up in the playoffs." What will people  be saying in the playoffs?
    Posted by prknsdnld
We weren't exactly wrong - Colon, Nova & Burnett all have ERA's over 4 since the break and over 5 in August.  Garcia's on the DL, and neither he nor Colon were trusted to go more than 5 innings against the Sox.

Phil Hughes has been the bright spot in recent weeks, which I would wager even optimistic Yankee fans would not have predicted a month ago.

The Yankees are playing better ball than the Sox at the moment.  If we can't keep our starting players in the lineup our team won't go far in the playoffs.  Same can be said about Bedard or Lackey.  Which ever one ends up being our third starter could also hold the key to any failure or success we have in the PS.  My choice is Bedard because he has a better chance of limiting the hits and runs.

Rosenthal has always been partial to the Yankees and has lobbied for them to get just about every top FA that becomes available.

    Nothing new there!

I see that the Yankees put Garcia onto the DL and want him to have som rehab work.
