Depleted Sox show interest in Kevin Millwood
By Sean McAdam

BOSTON -- Desperate times call for desperate measures, so the Red Sox are exploring any number of options after placing two starters -- John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka -- on the disabled list in the span of 24 hours.
One veteran under consideration, a major-league source indicated Wednesday night, is righthander Kevin Millwood. The Sox were said to be inquiring whether Millwood would be willing to first pitch in Pawtucket, giving the Red Sox a chance to evaluate him further.
Peter Gammons of NESN was the first to report the team's interest in Millwood.
Millwood, 36, signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees and spent April in their system, going 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA. But when the Yankees didn't add him to their major-league roster on May 1, Millwood used an opt-out clause in his contract and went home.
In 14 seasons with five clubs in the big leagues, Millwood is 159-137 with a career 4.11 ERA.
Reports had Millwood only hitting in the mid-80s with his fastball while in the Yankees' system. Last year, he was 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA pitching for the Baltimore Orioles.
Millwood is represented by Scott Boras, and until the Yankees expressed an interest in signing him in late March, received little in the way of offers from other clubs.
The team might also be keeping an eye on Armando Galarraga, who was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks. If Galarraga clears waivers, as expected, he could be another depth option, though if he didn't pitch well in the N.L. West which features pitcher-friendly ballparks, it's uncertain how he'd fare in the much tougher American League East.
The Sox would have already promoted Felix Doubront to Boston from Pawtucket had he not been on the disabled list with a groin pull. Doubront is close to being activated, but will need time to begin throwing. A club source said Doubront might be ready to contribute within two weeks. -

But when the Yankees signed him, it was a bad move right ! -

There is no way the Red Sox would consider signing Kevin Millwood. They are loaded with starting pitching; they can afford to lose a pitcher or two. It is the Yankees who have no starting pitching and no depth in the minor leagues....
Wasn't that the argument prior to the season by Smiley, Kim, et al?
Things change.

I am never opposed to signing people to 2 way Minor league contracts. You never know when you can catch lightening in a bottle, with very little risk. -

No, it was a no risk move by the Yanks. A bad move would have been guaranteed money and a regular spot in the rotation. -

While the Sox are loaded with Pitching talent the most MLB ready guy Doubront is on the D.L. and with TWO starters down, this move makes sense. -

Let's face it. The cupboard is pretty dry for Starters in Pawtucket.
Some rumors about Hassan getting a AAA call up soon. He's been superman down in AA ball for a while. Maybe Kalish to the DL and Hassan called up. -

He'd better pitch better than he has been, as there is only one welfare roster spot, and that is owned by Tim Wastefield. -

I don't understand... He opted out of his Yankees deal but decided to sign on with the Sox? I guess it makes sense because of the pitching injuries but if he's looking to get a rest-of-season starting job with the Sox I'm not so sure he'll be able to get it. -

The depth is okay to have, but it is a bad move. 4-16 last year with a plus 5 ERA... and only hitting the mid 80's with his fastball now. Sounds like we'll be screaming to get Lackey or Dice-K back! HA -

with MILLWOOD it will probably seem like SLACKEY and DICE are already back. -

Minor league contract. Minimum risk, decent upside. It is the only way that this makes sense.
Must include an opt-out for him like the Yankees contract did.
Not sure if Millwood has anything left in the tank, but let's see. -

It didn't look like he had much left the way he got knocked around in the minors earlier this year. Remember how Silly-Betty and others made fun of the Yankees when they signed him. Hopefully he can provide a little depth until Lackey or Dice-K get back although that is a frightening thought. -

Really? Exactly who are they "loaded" with?

I'm talking about guys like Pimental, Raunado, Workman, weiland, Tazawa, Doubront, Hernandez, Celestino Among others. They are all just either on the D.L. (Doubront, Tazawz) or they are too young, and low in the system to be able to contribute.Didn't know you were an expert of the Sox farm system Babe -

Millwood fits in perfectly for batting practice. Someone has to do the job.
He and Wake can get together and give each other fastball pointers.
In seriousness though, this is a low level move. If Millwood makes it up, I suspect he'd have to throw at least a few good minor league outings. At that point he'd be temporary anyway. The question is would he give up more than 6 runs or less than 6 runs? The bar set by Dice and Slackey is not exactly high at the moment. -

I'm not an expert on their farm system, but obviously you aren't either.
The list you just posted isn't exactly what most would deem "loaded".
