And the Rays

Texas, Angels, Detroit, Rays - those are your early favorites to make the playoffs this season.  Be like the first time in 20 years that Sox or yankees weren't playing in October.

Fine by me.

I have my sights set on a WS in 2013
Look the moves the yankees made helped their pitching staff more than I think Bard and Aceves, who are better suited for bull pen work, will. But Kuroda is a #3 starter at best.  He's getting older.  Will never put up the #'s he did last year......in the NL......in a big park, etc..........Is he better than AJ or Colon?  Sure but so are about 200 other pitchers.......the key will be Nova's development.......but even still, I think the Rays take the division this year......even if the yankees make the playoffs how do they get past Detroit, Texas, and the Angels who, even in past years can't get past in the playoffs.....
Posted by andrewmitch
Yankees have a better pen then Tampa.

Kuroda will be expected to pitch 6 innings an outing.

As you well know anything can happen in a short series and did last season against Detroit a few guys get cold at the wrong time and you're done.

The Yankees were 7-2 against Texas during the regular season last year btw.
This reminds me of early 2004 when the Yankee swooped in and traded for A-rod after the Sox deal blew up. It was like Armaggedon among Sox fans. I seem to remember that worked out pretty well. Everyone needs to relax, and hope the Sox front office doesn't panic.
Posted by jasko2248
If there ever was a year not to worry about what the yankees do, this is it.

It could be refreshing for the Sox front office to take a new perspective on things.

Funny last season all the prognosticators picking the Yankees to finish at least 3rd with Colon and Garcia in the rotation.

Yankees still win 97 games and finish first with a host of injuries.

Not sure about the pen.  Albeit Madson on a 1 year, 9 million deal with the Rays "going for broke" would have been a great move for them.  I am sure the Rays could add arms to the pen mid season if they think that will be a difference maker in Oct....Yankee's pen doesn't scare me.  This is it for Mo and although he is still very capable, is not the same guy.  Robertson - yeah he's very solid.  But who else?

perhaps, but this team is one year older now.  the decline for that IF is now set in motion.  granderson will not repeat last year's #'s....

but let me be clear - the yankees have secured second place in 2012.  Too bad the Wild Card has gone West........

Cherington didn't get outsmarted.    He just does what Lucchino tells him to do.  There were multiple chances to get Kuroda and Lucchino thought only of $$$.

Kuroda is likely to be the No. 4 starter for the NYY behind Sabathia, Nova, and Pineda with Garcia and Hughes competing as the No. 5.
Kuroda would have been the No. 3 with Valentine being cautious with the back of Buchholz and not overextend him too much beyond the 82.2 inning he pitched in 2011.

I'm basing my opinion on what i saw last season from the teams you claim are have better pens then the Yankees.

The Yankees pen will be an improvement this season.

Mo, Soriano, Robertson, Joba will be back mid season. Cory Wade, one of Garcia, Hughes, AJ.

Decent prospects from AAA, Phelps, Warren.

I'm guessing that the pen is not complete though, another left specialist, I expect a few trades before the Yankees are done.

Soriano?  Joba?  And not til mid-season?  Garcia and AJ in the pen, really?  You're losing me in that case you're trying to make........

You should add Boone Logan to that discussion if I were you

Rivera, Robertson, Logan and the wild card is Soriano and then if they are smart, they put Hughes there and get another lefty - now they have a pen that can get the job done.

CC, Pineda, Nova, Kuroda.

Hughes, Garcia, AJ battling for #5.

Wow, already Pineda is your #2?

CC
Nova
Kuroda
Pineda
Garcia who they re-signed for a reason

Hughes is better as a swing man/long man

AJ they need to dump

(but for starters, Texas will blow that out of the water if Feliz stays as the closer)

I'm losing you?

Going too fast?

Garcia wouldn't make a great long reliever out of the pen?

AJ is probably gone if they can find a taker and eat salary.

Let me point out they have a number of decent rotation guys at SWB.

Who will be promoted to the pen this season.

The pen is the least of problems for the NYY.

You named one pitcher out of the pen for Texas.

Who else? They're better then the Yankees with 1 pitcher?

Besides Feliz quite possibly could be in the rotation next season.

Wilson is gone unsigned Darvish is a question mark even if he signs.

no need to be rude

Hughes would be a much better long man than Garcia

Pen is a concern and should not be overlooked

Just saying "someone will get promoted" doesn't solve open issues - The Rays could say the same thing - more easily than anyone with that farm system they have with pitching now

Here's my issue with you.

You knock the depth of the Yankees pen but so far there's no mention of any names/personnel or depth of the teams that you claim to be deeper/better.

You've named Feliz who could be in the rotation next season. That leaves Ogando.

The Yankees have more depth and more to possibilities choose from then any of the teams you've listed.

Here's my issue with YOUR POSTS - your analyses are incomplete and then you make things personal (by saying - here's my issue with YOU); whilst ignoring my posts where I did clearly address your questions (eg presenting the entire roster of the Rangers' pen or, structing the yankees pen to make it formidable)

sorry, but this thread has now become a waste of my time - later

You can't argue a point with generalities which is what you have done.

Making statements like Texas, Anaheim and Tampa are better then the Yankees but then not dissecting their personnel like you have with the Yankees.

The Yankees had the best won-lost record in the AL last season with Colon, AJ and Garcia in the rotation.

What does that tell you??? Because of their pen.

They were 7-2 against the vaunted Rangers.

When the Yankees signed Burnett he had as good or better stuff than Kuroda in my opinion and was much younger.  A steady diet of AL hitters and playing under real fan pressure burried AJ, so I will be surprised to see Kuroda hold up.  The Yankees had to make some kind of move but giving up Montero?

Its a risk but time will tell!
