Good point. BobbyV is leaning towards an extra pitcher. Doubt he will carry three catchers...

One simple move could allow for 3 catchers: Iggy at SS.
    1) It allows Aviles and Lava to be the 5th OF'er and send DMac to AAA, opening a slot.
    2) Punto can also play the OF in a pinch.
    3) Salty can play 1B when AGon rests.

I'm not saying 3 catchers is a good idea, but we would have depth at every position if Iggy is the FT SS.

Shoppach hit under .200 last year and cost about $1 mil. It's not like we can't trade him to someone who needs a catcher badly or just release him. He's possibly intended as a place holder anyway and why not take a flyer on him in case he catches the same hot streak he had in Cleveland. He's an insurance policy. The Sox probably project Lavarnway to make the transition at some point this year.

Why do we need 3 catchers?  Papi's going to get nearly all the DH ABs.  Let Lavarnway start in Pawtucket, and just replace Shoppach when he's ready.

Yeah, he's a great kid.  I hung out w/ him at a tailgate the fall of his Jr. year.

[QUOTE]It makes a lot of sense to slot him in AAA even if he is good enough to make the team after ST. Keep him in Pawtucket to get his bat warm and let him develop some more and bring him up just after we can squeeze that extre year out of him. That extra year might be worth 15-20 mil if we are lucky.

I agree, except for that last part.  Because he would be a super 2, we'd be paying millions more for years "3"-"6" [really years 4-7] (going to arb for year "3" and then working off of higher salaries for years "4" - "6").  It would probably only save about $5M overall, but we get the extra year, which is nothing to sneeze at.

I really like the idea of three Catchers and Iggy playing SS. I do wonder how much playing time Lava would get as a Catcher? Retaining Varitek as the backup Catcher and mentor would have been a better fit. However being around Gary Tuck would be a real big plus for Lava. Whether now or later both of these kids will be playing in Fenway Park....for a long time.
