    Last nights game

Last night was a gritty performance from everyone.  Jacoby started things off by reminding us he was back, then made a great catch later in the game.  Lackey hung in until the seventh inning which was nice to see and he and Scuter also made huge defensive plays.

Our entire offense looked like it finally got p..sed off from losing four in a row to Texas so it was a nice team win.  Lets hope Beckett does the same with "Papi" back in the lineup but lastly, I want to give Lavarnway props for helping out, the kid looks very promising.

Lackey hung in there because the defense played very well and he got lucky.  How you walk in a run to get to Hamilton with the bases loaded, get to a 3-0 count and survive is beyond me.  He's lucky he got out of the 3rd inning with the score 6-3.  It could have easily been 6-5

Give that win to Gonzo and Ellsbury.  I think scoring the early run followed by Gonzo's blast loosened everyone up.  Add Papi into the mix and they are back to being the offensive jauggarnaut.

With everyone healthy, this team can beat anyone.

I agree, just didn't feel like having all the Lackey supporters breathing down my neck again.

watching slackey pitch is like watching flies procreate.
however, his ERA is now south of 6.00. who would have thought that would ever happen?
now if only jd crawford can get his OBP over .300, i'll apologize to theo concerning these 2 great signings.

YAZZER, You know I'm not much of a Lackey fan but I feel blessed we won the game.  Josh tonight and another big test for Wake to follow, it should be interesting.

    Good Morning Craze,
Last night was an all around great performance. Ellsbury leading off again just proved how important he is to this offense. Lavarnway seemed right at home hitting MLB pitching and coming inches from his first MLB round-tripper. Gonzo Hitting 2HR, and contributions from everyone. Papi will be back in the lineup tonight so I wonder what they will do with Lavarnway..If we can at least split the series in Texas, Id be Ok with a 5-3 road trip looking forward to a 9 game home stand starting this weekend. With 3 games against the yanks, A's and rangers, we have a chance to gain at least 3 games on the Yankees..Beckett throwin the pill over the dish from the bump tonight..I like our chances...

So Lackey is lucky when the defense plays well and gets behind 3-0 and gets out of it is beyond your comprehension???????

I bet if it was Beckett or Lester your comments would be.

A great job by XXXXXXXX after he walked that run in and went to 3-0 I thought for sure the game was over. However the greatness of XXXXXXX showed through when he came back and got the outs he needed.

Which is what most RS fans would say.BTW since the AS game he is 6-1 4.65 ERA with 3 wins against TB, Tex and NYY

Morning southpaw I agree and hope our team can go on a nice role.  Last nights win was perfect, I was very uneasy with Lackey on the mound but we pulled out the win with the Yanks and Rays both losing.

I really liked the bunt in the first inning to move Ellsbury to third with one out.  This put Gonzo in a position where he could really try to hit a deep fly to drive in the run, which if deep enough would break the home run drought.

Yeah it was fortunate that Lewis was off his game to say the least.  No doubt that the opposing pitcher has a lot to do with how your offence looks.

    Re: Last nights game

I watched the game. Lackey played a great defensive game, he speared the 1-4-3 DP to get out of the 6th. He fielded his position well, and got his big lug over to 1b well. He also got some great defense on the Ellsbury catch, Scutaro's great play up the middle. And he threw what I call a Lackey performance--a few innings of owning the hitters, a few innings of wildness, a slew of harder hit balls as he passed the 70 pitch mark and finally leaves with 4 ER at 100 pitches in 6-2/3....It's a great outing against a playoff-caliber team. Great outing? Yes, people need to accept a couple of things with John and with Wakefield. If the team's offense does it's job, Lackey keeps winning games, and Wakefield wouldn't have gone 5 straight starts without a victory. Wakefield has pretty pitched better than John overall in this stretch, but I'm not going to take away from Lackey. He has found his ways to keep the team in the game. He gets more support than most of the other SPs, but he is leaving with 4 runs allowed, not 8 runs allowed, and he's making it to the 7th, which is my mantra with Tim. Two guys put the team in a position to win, one just happens to be getting the better offensive attack behind them to win. You can even say that one is getting better defense behind him too...I really pulled for John last night. I'm glad he got out of that jam, and again he did his job. His overall job was hold the lead, don't give up more than 4 runs.....He did his job, Sox won.

    Re: Last nights game

Lewis didn't do his job btw, he gave up 7 ER, and did not do his job. The funny part about the Lackey games is that since the Sox are winning, fewer and fewer people attempt to rip him. Because Wakefield hasn't gotten a personal pitching win in has last 5 starts, even though in 4 of them he threw well enough to keep his team in the game, it's resulted in Release him yesterday threads. Wins make all the hate go away. Except the SP isn't so responsible for the wins as much as people tend to think here. It takes a good pen--Morales gets out of a jam, or Lackey allowed 5 runs. Aceves throws a gem 8th. Wheeler albeit for 1 garbage homer and then nothing else. Helps that the team had a 7-run lead too. Wakefield hasn't had a big lead since the 199th win. Gee, let me think. Runs, road home runs (2 by AGON), big offense on the road--team wins. Great pitching performances by the SPs leading to wins on the road---not so much, no offense to support them.

Texas is a very tough lineup to face and Lackey did field his position great but never the less our team really supported him.  I wish we could give Josh and Bedard that type of support.  Bedard must wondering why we can't put any runs up for him.

    Re: Last nights game

People need to stop judging pitchers or over-analyzing pitchers when the Sox score 3 runs or less for them. It's 10 times harder to pitch out of a jam when it's 1-0 than it is 11-4. Had Lackey been given 1 run yesterday, and the Sox lost 5-1 (include the homer in the 9th by Texas), how much you want to bet that this room would have 4 Lackey threads requesting his ouster from the rotation, as people have seen enough (I said that but after the 8 run debacle v. Toronto when he was really throwing his all-time worst). In fact, it would have been worse if the final score was a 5-3 loss. Then it would be, he walked in a run, he lost his composure. But when your team scores 11, the perception changes. Everything changes from the fan perspective. Winning games are great, I wish Bedard, Wakefield, and Beckett would get better offense behind them WHEN THEY ARE STILL on the mound. I hate games where the final score doesn't show that the score of the game was 3-1 opponent when the SP left a game in the 7th or 8th. That's why the offense is the predominant reason why the Sox win on the road. Not the starting pitching. It's the offense. They get the big offensive performances and they win. They have had mostly consistent SP for most of the season, so few implosions in the 2nd or 3rd, so few times that a SP didn't make it at least to the 6th. That is hard to do. But they lose when they don't put up runs, and they win often when they are scoring in the 5s or better. It's just the way it is for this team. They don't win the close low scoring games as much as other teams might. They win when the offense explodes, the homers leave the yard--on the road, especially.

Offense--team wins. Pitching? team has it all the time. Offense? When they hit, they win. When they don't, they lose. That may be their death nail in a playoff series, unfortunately.
