I'd have preferred someone who could also play the OF, but this is decent enough insurance.

More importantly, though, I hope that after getting Napoli down to one year Ben is already looking for a 1B solution for 2014 and beyond...unless the team believes Shaw will eventually be the answer, there isn't much there in terms of organizational depth.

There are a number of players who may be moved to 1B soon: (One of two from) Cecchini, Middlebrooks, Bogaerts, Lavarnway, and maybe more...

Cecchini hasn't really shown the pop you'd want from a 1B so far...

Last year was kind of an anomaly for Lavarnaway. He hit much worse than he ever has so far in his professional career. I think a lot of it had to do with catching so many games.

No, but he may make up for it with unprecedented speed from that position. I'm not sure how well he fields 3B, but if he is better than Middlebrooks, we may move Midds to 1B and Cecchini's power at 3B is less of a differential.

I think he was also focusing much of his attention and practice towards defense in 2012.

I think starting the year in Pawtuckett will do nothing but help him.

My question is have any of these low risk gambles ever worked outnfor the Red Sox. The only one I can think of was Cody Ross and he was not a minor league deal but much more expensive.

I may be wrong about minor league deals or ML deals here, but I think here are some recent ones...

Pedro Ciriaco, Mauro Gomez,  Aaron Cook, Darnell McDonald, Scott Atchison

Also David Ortiz and Tim Wakefield.

    In response to redsoxpride34's comment:

was really hoping the sox would aim higher than overbay. Logan Morrison would have been a good choice. I thought the idea was to find a left handed hitter who plays LF and 1B to spell gomes and napoli. Overbay cant play LF and is on the decline.

Overbay is nothing more than minor league depth.  Napoli isnt a platoon player, he is a clean up hitter.  We dont really need a backup 1B on the MLB roster.  If Napoli is injured, they will call up one of Overbay, Gomez.

Re: the LF outfielder.  This is a 450 at-bat position (unless they play Gomes vs righties).  This is the player they are still trying to acquire.

The good thing about Overbay is now they can focus on getting the best possible left-handed hitting LF and not the best possible left-handed hitting LF who can also play first base.

Opens up our options a bit.  Although to be honest, Im not 100% sure that Overbay is ahead of Mauro Gomez on the depth chart.

Rich Hill, Scott Podsedick.  Also: there are many other former major league players, signed to minor league contracts who have provided great value to their teams.  Nate McClouth was very hot in Aug and September of last year and was one of the major reasons Bal made the playoffs.  Know how McClouth was acquired?

Sign as many former major leaguers to minor league contracts as you can!!

Name me one team that is looking for, or has every looked for speed from the 1B position? The answer is probably none.

Would it be such a terrible thing to break a paradigm every now and then.

I realize the reasoning behind using 1B as your position of great power, but if Cecchini can hit 15-18 HRs, get a bunch of DBLs, and also steal 50 bases, is he really a downgrade from a .245  35 HR hulk at 1B?
