    make lavarnway a 3rd Baseman??

with youk struggling like we've never seen, no discernable MLB ready 3rd baseman in the minors and no trade pieces for a good 3rd baseman why not teach lava how to play 3rd?? he can't be any worse in the field than cabrera or youk (as it stands now). Plus his bat would be a big upgrade as youk is slacking big time and youk would be a better trade chip than saltalamacchia IMO

Lars Anderson is also an option.. i saw he is also learning how to play in the outfield so why not 3rd base?? if you did this then you could package youk and salty for a pitcher and bring up anderson and lavarnway.

    thoughts?

There is a MLB ready 3B in AAA, Will Middlebrooks.  Youk isn't going to sit on the bench while a rookie takes his spot.

If the Sox didn't care about Lava sticking at Catcher, he'd be on the MLB roster already.

Third base is arguably the deepest position in the minors, you don't just "make" a catcher a third baseman outside of fantasyland, defense is important, this isn't fantasy baseball, etc...other than that, relax kid, the delete button was a joke....

i'm not sure middlebrooks is disciplined enough to be in the majors yet. his BB/K ratio for the past 2 years:

    2010: 34BB/121K
    2011: 27BB/133K (over 4 levels)
through ll games in 2012 he has 1 walk to 8 strikeouts.

He's more MLB ready as a 3B than Lavarnway is......

He had an .838 OPS last year and currently has a .930 OPS.  He's clearly doing something right with the bat, even if he won't be confused with the greek god of walks.

    He was ranked #51 on BA's pre-season 2012 top 100 prospect list.

thats true. but with how shotty salty is playing he might be behind the dish soon enough. what about lars anderson though? he plays first base and is MLB ready for sure. The transition from 1st to third can't be as hard as C-3rd

although anderson could be great trade bait for a reliever that we desprately need!

I don't see Anderson as anything more than trade bait who will be dealt this June/July.  Sox almost sent his away last summer before the trade was called off because of medicals.  1B to 3B is a huge change and requires a different skill set.  Youk and Cabrera made it look easy enough because both came up as 3B's.  Also, there's a reason you don't see left handed 3B's.

I wouldn't have any problem with one of Salty/Shoppach being dealt and Lava taking over as starting C.

Man this is a post created by someone who has no idea what he is talking about.  Youkalis will start to hit and if he doesn't, then Will Middlebrooks will be called up.  He is the highest ranked prospect in the red sox farm system and is tearing up AAA pitching so far this year.  Man are you dumb.

One thing is for sure, Youk needs to go.  Middlebrooks is the next 3B.  Maybe make Middlebrooks a corner OF'er?  Who knows.  Again, Youk needs to go.

    1.  The Spx are loaded at 3B in the minors.

    2.  Lars Anderson throws left-handed.  Yes, this excludes him from playing 3B.

    3.  Leave Lavarnway at catcher.  Don't get me wrong -  I do like Saltalamacchia and think he is a much better hitter than Johnny Bench.   Of course, Johnny Bench is like 68 years old...

So - make Middlebrooks a corner OF?  Yes, that should solve the Youkilis concerns...

Hey spc, long time no see. I guess you conveniently got "busy" since last August.

    Imagine that.

How'd that 120 win season work out for you?

I'm not ripping the OP because he's been OK in other posts, but yeah, this thread didn't make sense.

Middlebrooks is closer to the majors as a 3B. He's ready defensively, and even though he's a free swinger, he's getting closer offensively.

Lavarnway might be ready as a hitter (and catcher), but if you move him to 3B and can play the position, he's going to need most of this season to be ready.
