    Mariano!

What an absolutely great career for who appears to be a really classy guy.

He can still pitch, and I would take him next year in the Sox pen if it were possible.

However, I think that there is one team that he does not want to face any more and that is the Sox.  Say what you want about the wind yesterday and Middlebrooks's home run, it was yet another blown save against the Red Sox.

I think it's pretty well known that mo has his most BS vs sox

maybe not as well known is he has his 3rd most saves vs sox(59)

&  3rd most road saves  at fenway (35)

obviously all those numbers effected by how many gms vs sox

while many of us might want to point to age with all his BS this yr

ironically he has the most BS since his 1st yr closing (tied)

ok so maybe it is age to old / to young ;-)

I think Mo probably knows his body well enough to know he needs to retire while hes still close to on top. If he played another year or two, I think his skills would erode significantly more and we'd be seeing a lot more of what we saw this weekend. 7 BS this year. Time to hang 'em up and rest on his laurels.

Jeter should hang them up also.

It is kind of sad to see a career deteriorate right before our eyes....even a Yankee.

Too many stars think they can go on and on.

Who was the last pro athlete that actually retired at the correct time?

I would rather see these people go out in style ( Rivera is obviously still pretty good, but I am not targeting him by any means). I hope Ortiz knows when to hang them up, I would hate to see him at 41 and taking 15 minutes to run to firstbase ( although , it's getting close to that amount of time for him to circle the bases after a HR).

I think expansion and the size of these contracts makes it hard for these guys to undertsand that father time is catching up with them. That, and the fact that their is so little really good young talent out there ( especially pitchers...this is why you have Dempsters and Phil Hughes stil trying to resurrect a somewhat promising past that is long gone).

Difference is, Rivera is a great competitor thats humble. Jeter appears to have a bit of an ego. Doesnt want to let the good ole days go.

he lead the league in HITS  LAST YEAR w/a 362 OBP

jeet looks pretty bad and probably should not play anymore this yr

age certainly is a factor but

I can blame a lot of that on the original injury in the PO last yr

it was the type of injury that kept him from working his legs the whole time

so I'm thinking while his ankle might have healed  his legs never got into shape

which led to the other muscle/leg injuries later

no need to go into how important the legs are

take that and the fact he led the league a yr ago in hits

I have NP with him playing another yr

    that said

I have NP with him retiring now either

    and
with all this beat the lux tax stuff

unless he plays for that 8 mill players option

I'll probably lean towards hoping 4 retirement

Wonderful, but thats not what I meant. No matter his "stats" from last year, he will never again be the 25 year old painting the town red and basking in multiple championships. Those days are gone forever. The fact that hes trying to keep his 20 something lifestyle alive is obvious by his behavior. It also shows he has an ego issue that I can guarantee you spreads into other areas of his life. Any man that jumps from woman to woman to woman while living the playboy lifestyle has an ego issue, which includes most pro athletes. And, that brings us full circle. Mariano he aint, I dont care what last years stats were. You missed the point.

Sure, he may still be able to hit.

But, if he insists on playing SS next year, over more abled-bodied players, that's a problem.

I'd be surprised if he were to graciously accept a DH role.

Do you really think he's going to field as well as he has in the last five years?

He's been so-so, in that time.

    He's not even that now.

No, he's probably doesn't have the power that DHs normally have.

But, hey, if you think he should stick at SS, I'm all for it!!
