    Masterson Dealing

Maybe I just haven't been paying attention but in looking at the pitching matchups for the Cleveland series I saw Justin Masterson has been lights out thus far.  Sure it's still early but he's 3-0, 0.41 ERA, 0.82 Whip with 20 SO in 22 innings.  I guess having Francona back may be helping him like having Farrell back has been helping Lester & Buchholz.  Surprised I haven't heard posters screaming about that trade for Victor....

It was a bad trade but the Sox thought they had seen enough and really wanted Vic, who actually did OK for the Sox.  Masterson is a big strong guy with that natural sinker ball, a pretty good combo.

    Re: Masterson Dealing

Masterson walks too many guys and can't get lefties out.  For this reason he will never be a consistent pitcher.  When he gets on a hot streak (generally against righty heavy lineups) he is pretty dominant.  As for the trade yeah it looks pretty bad because we didn't keep V Mart, but so far Masterson has had one great season and 2 pretty bad seasons with the Indians so it's not like we got taken to the cleaners.

Always liked Masterson and hope he continues to do well ... just not against us.

Masterson turned into V-Mart which turned into Matt Barnes and Henry Owens.

Masterson struggles with LHH.  Hes a good kid and a good pitcher, but I liked what VMart did while here and the draft picks we got for him.

if thats the case then it could end up being a great trade for the sox

Looks like one that worked out well for both teams (though the other two pitchers Cleveland acquired with Masterson haven't amounted to anything in the majors to date).

Why was it a bad trade?

    Re: Masterson Dealing

That trade was a steal.  Masterson, over the last three years, has a BAA (batting average against) of .290 vs lefties.  That is a major flaw, that if he hasnt corrected by now, will never correct.

VMART was a leader when he was here.  We had a very solid 1.5 years out of him.  He provided player leadership and was a blast to watch.  When we let him go, we received two prospects, who both have far more upside than Masterson.

We'll see if Masterson can keep it up; however, the smart money is on him reverting to career averages.  His career average is a mediocre pitcher.

    Id rather have Dempster.

He has had an ERA over 4.5 in 3 of the 4 years he's played for Clevelant.  If it was such a combo, the results would be there.

His arm slot causes him to struggle against lefties.  They see the ball too well.  Maybe he's corrected this (either by learning to throw over the top , or developing an out pitch vs lefties)...But he's had these stretches before, so I doubt it.

He would make an awesome righty specialist.  Chad Bradford type.

It did end up being a good trade for the Sox.  Masterson has pitched like a #4 pitcher 3 of the 4 years since the trade.  We had VMART, who plays like an all-star and is a true clubhouse leader for 1.5 years.  When we let VMART walk (arguably a mistake) we received two awesome pitching prospects.

Note: you cannot say that it was a definately not a mistake because of the two prospects that we received. Thats using the benefit of hindsight.  You can say that letting him walk was definately worked out , but you cannot say that keeping him would have definately been a mistake (have to assess trades based on what you knew when they happened and we had no idea we would get two great pitching prospects).

And thats coming from a pitching specialist.  Dead on.

    Re: Masterson Dealing

I can't agree with the view with it being a bad trade. While Martinez was playing for the Sox, Masterson stunk with the Indians and would have been nothing more than a long reliever with the Red Sox.

Masterson finally started pitching well in 2011 but faded badly at the end. His ERA in September of 2011 was 5.65 (Hmm ... a pitcher who was great all year fades in September w/o chicken and beer. Imagine that. LOL)

    And he stunk last year.

So basically, since the Sox traded him in 2009, he's had just five consistent months of being a quality starter plus three starts so far.

So during the time the Sox had Martinez, the trade benefited the Sox. And if it at least one of the players the Sox with the draft picks pans out, the post-Martinez time could be at least a wash if Masterson continues to pitch well or even benefit the Sox if Barnes or Owens turn out better.
