    Matt Barnes - Salem Update

I posted previously Matt Barnes' numbers before he was brought up to Salem. He made his first start at Salem and it was outstanding. His stats are below:

    6 IP, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 12K

He also got the win. He is fast tracking it and has a good chance of making it to Boston sometime in 2013.

2014 at the earliest.  They learned from Hansen and Buch that a pitcher needs to face adversity in the minors before getting the call.

Buchholz was a converted SS.  And Hansen was a reliever w/ only 1 college secondary pitch.  Matt Barnes is legit starter w/ 3 plus pitches.

People please Single A ball is one step above College Level. Great job in the long run maybe but Single A is a long way from Triple AAA and the Major Leagues is another big step. He is of no immediate help to this disastrous 2012 season. This year looks like a Bridge year to last place.

What?  You're thinking of Kelly.  I'm not questioning Barnes upside, but the Sox know that a pitcher will face adversity at some point, so they want them to face it in the minors first.  That may mean Barnes is thrown in the deep end (AAA) sooner than he should be.

Keep him on the fast track. No need to bring these kind of guys along slowly. Pitching is not rocket science. If he has two more starts like that , move him up to Portland. Challenge him. He is not learning anything by dominating hitters in the low minors.

Clay went to Angelina JuCo to be their SS.  Obviously, he could also pitch, plus they already had Josh Tomlin.

It's not like he didn't pitch while he was there though.  1.05 ERA in 85 2/3 IP to go with 129 K's at Angelina.
