Mayor of Ft. Myers does not care for our Sox...

Fort Myers mayor Randy Henderson told the News-Press that the Lee County region would have been better served to permit the Red Sox to leave the county rather than paying for the construction of a new facility for the Sox, JetBlue Park, which opened in 2012. The decision in 2008 to fund a new Red Sox spring training facility put Lee County on the hook not only for most of the construction expenses related to JetBlue but also obligated the region to fund improvements in the Twins’ facility in Fort Myers. Meanwhile, Lee County is still paying off its debts for the construction of City of Palms Park — the currently vacant facility where the Sox played before moving to JetBlue.

Lee County now faces more than $436 million in ballpark expenses over the next 32 years, according to the News-Press.

“It would have been smarter to let the Red Sox move on,” Henderson told the News-Press. “I would debate that we wouldn’t be any worse off, in fact, I think we would be better off.”

The article also suggested that there is little optimism about the possibility of wooing the Washington Nationals to move to the vacated City of Palms Park.

Blows me away the city council or whomever (tax payers?) would have approved the funding when they still had not paid off the older park (City of Palms).

    Just stunning.

Would bet all the hotels, stores, venders, and restaurants who pay a huge tax bill to the city of Fort Myers would not agree with that view. The millions of people who go to Fort Myers because RS play their ST games there are giving back a return on that investment.

Florida, Az, NY, etc... They all do the same thing except in MA. Where despite all the pressure to build new stadiums they have resisted that move.

Some actually believe that building a stadium for a sports team actually brings in money for the city or state. It does but it is minimal and before the bill is paid they are looking for a new one.

The places you mention do like the influx of money. However tip get to millions as You say consider that at 11k per game to get to a million will take 5 years. Then you have to see how many actually live there that go to games As we'll as how many go there normally.

the ROI as you can see by the fact that they still owe money on the old place is not so great.

it is a great deal for the Red Sox but not the area.

Btw the taxes go up for every one in the area homeowners, visitors, business owners, etc...

They all end up paying more in taxes at restaurants, hotels, and any other business.

Other than Spring Break Ft. Myers would be a ghost town without Boston. However I think it absurd that the team or any team sought/seeks public funding when they are willing to pay a pitcher $30k a start or a hitter $12k a game..... the fault is on the city council but it is just another example of how wrong it all is

The more successful a town becomes the more valuable it becomes and subsequently the  more taxes one will pay.

sounds like the plan that great Socialist Texan GW Bush cooked up for his Texas Rangers team. They built the stadium for him on the taxpayer dime, and he got superich from it....dam those big gubmint liberals!
