not nearly enough to get J Upton. The ACTUAL prospect cost to land J Upton would be way too much for an inconsistent player with a bad attitude

But why would AZ want Ells?  Aren't they trying to move Upton because they have too many OFs now?

Exactly.....the 'Soft-one' doesnt seem to think these things through.....   Arizona wants pitching...hence the package they COULD have gotten with Seattle.  Not 3 outfielder and a couple of unproven pitchers.....

Softlaw wants to put together a blockbuster deal to land the Josh Beckett of outfielders. Sometimes the sheer genius of this man amazes me.

You can get J. Upton long term, he's 25 for 2013, from the trade pool that includes Ellbury and his draft compensation, De La Rosa or Webster, Brentz and one other from anyone on the farm but Bogearts, Bradley, Jr. and Barnes. May take less, but if the Bravos and Rangers get even more desperate, add Bogearts and subtract Brentz and close the deal. Extend J. Upton through age 32 at base 17.

Punt on Morse and Napoli and embarrassing 1st market, and sign Kotchman to a minor or 1 year MLB contract and wait until the summer and go with Kotchman and Gomez into the summer until the salary dump time. Kotchman is a fine defender and Gomez can drive the ball from right side and can play backup 3rd and backup 1st. Kotchman and Gomez will cost virtually zero.

    J. Upton will cost under 10 million for 2013, which means zero difference once Ellsbury and his 10 million cost is shipped to another payroll.

Without that embarrassing 39 million on Napoli, about 12 million in payroll space will be free for what will be a better summer and next winter market for 1st base.

    Anticipate Cherry, stop reacting incompetently.
gOOD POINTS, softy......  I see a "BLOCKBUSTER" coming !!

Why would a team want to give up a draft pick to sign Jitterbug Jake?

For you numnuts, the trade market isn't two teams.

Nick Franklin, Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor and one of Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen or James Paxton

As I suspected, the DBacks settled for one elite level pitching prospect and position prospect, and two young pen arms:

    2B/SS  Franklin  (Mariners #5 prospect)

Pen Arm Furbush (currently working out of MLB pen young pitcher)

Pen Arm Pryor (currently a young pen arm with a WHIP of 1.5 plus)

Top prospect starter (Hultzen and Paxton are BA ranked 4th and 6th ranked pitching prospect in MLB)

Ellsbury and his draft compensation and Webster or De La Rosa will net the equivalent of a BA ranked top 10 pitching prospect

Brentz and one other Red Sox prospect from anyone on the farm except Barnes, Bradley and Bogearts will net the equivalent of a top 2B/SS prospect

The 2 young pen arms can be met by simply plucking a couple of young 2nd rate minor league pitchers off the 40 man roster
Hey Soft-one.  Ellsbury is an outfielder.  If you're SERIOUSLY thinking that the D-Backs will be jumping up and down to get a player who has been injured almost every season JUST BECAUSE HE COULD COME WITH DRAFT COMPENSATION in 2014....then you really need to think that one through.  They DO NOT want an outfielder....that's why Upton is expendable.  Also....aren't you the one who comes on here and starts a thread every other day about how horrible 'Ellspuff' is??  But you think another team is going to want to trade for him when they know that he is often injured and doesn't have a huge track record of playing hurt????  REALLY?????  Please think things through before you post and stop making it so easy to dump on you....it's getting painful.

Plus......what is your love afair with this guy??  What has he done that has you jumping up and down for joy?  Solid player...yes.  Player worth giving up 3 out of our 6 top prospects?  Nope.  Unless the guy's name is Stanton....I would hold onto our top trading picks and either A) find a better trade or B) Let them develop and help us in 2014.  I figured the guy who want to watch the amazing Mauro Gomex grow as our 1st baseman "star" would have wanted that too......

Very difficult to engage in a narrative with posters who aren't able to comprehend more than "sign Napoli".

One poster keeps repeating that the DBACks have OF"ers and don't want Ellsbury. Despite repeated comments that the trade market isn't "two teams", it goes on like an ape and a banana.

Another guy throw out "they won't give a draft pick to sign Ellsbury"? WTH!!!!!!!!!
So who is this mysterious 3rd team that's stepping up for Ellsbury, and why haven't they come to the Sox and inquired about him directly?? Jt is very easy to make arbitrary statements like a 3rd team being involved without providing how that 3rd team fits into the deal.

Plus with all that said...the Sox are giving up WAY too much talent to acquire Upton, when Ellsbury, if healthy is an equivalent MLB player. No way I want to sell 3 or so top prospects in this deal to acquire a guy who doesn't even want to play in Boston!

If the Sox gave up Ellsbury, Brentz, Della Rosa/Webster and another prospect for just Upton it would be time for Cherington to leave town as he would have been swindled. If you want to go to the Marlins with this type of deal for Stanton, then you will have something.

Who is this third team? Both the Mariners, Bravos and Rangers are looking for OF'er.

The first step is for Cherry to put Ellsbury on the trade market. The "third teams" will manifest.

Truly a shame that that Red Sox GM's don't get run out of town for Crawbust and "the deal of the century".

when Ellsbury, if healthy is an equivalent MLB player. No way I want to sell 3 or so top prospects in this deal to acquire a guy who doesn't even want to play in Boston!

What trade value Ellsbury has will go to near zero in a matter of weeks. The Red Sox have Shane, thanks to the great Cherry. They do not have a 25 year old who doesn't need "if healthy" and who provdies RH OF OPS.

    J. Upton wants to play in Boston, and will approve the deal by waiving his no-trade if he gets an extesnion that the Red Sox shoudl give him and the DBacks are not going to give him.

Cherry should be run out of town for 23 million for Ellsbury to FA and Shane in RF.

How do you know that Ellsbury has not been offered up as available to other teams?? Considering that he has one year remaining they would put him out there and if a team offered a fair trade then we'd hear more. you know what happens when you ASSUME!

Justin Upton does NOT want to play in Boston otherwise he would not have named the Red Sox on his NO TRADE LIST...he easily could have left the Sox off his no-trade list if he wanted to come here, and still negotiate the long-term deal before he agrees to a trade. The fact that they are on the list means they'd have to provide a Crawbust deal (as you would phrase it) to acquire him and get him to waive the no trade...comprehension is a terrible thing to waste!

It appears Ellsbury must have turned you down for an autograph since you have this hatred toward him...did Victorino do the same thing to you at his press conference?? However, regarding the 25 year old type you want to acquire in Upton...he may just be the kid you are sending to the D-Backs for Upton...Brentz looks like a legit prospect, albeit a prospect still and will probably be ready for the majors when he is 25.
