    In response to Softlaw1's comment:

Morse isn't worth much. He's only had one good season in his entire career, not last season, and he's now in his 30's. Will be a FA at year end.  Nats are bluffing and want to get rid of the guy.

Cherry is caught with his pants down again, after "the deal of the century". He had a chance to sign R. Johnson and/or Loney for one year and cheap, and could have easily moved Loney if needed and negotiated from a position of strength.

At this point, time to pass on Morse bidding process, even though Nats will be motivated sellers.

If Napoli is damaged goods and/or wont agree to one year deal plus team 2nd year option, split a year's time between Kotchman (make MLB contract offer and if market better just beat one year dirt cheap market) and Gomez.

easily moved loney?? no one would ever give up anything for him..

    In response to Softlaw1's comment:

Loney was a one year 2M free agent who cost nothing. Easily moved him and his entire contract, if a better value and fit was acquired.

You are like Cherry, you have no plan and you just react from weakness.

loney is a horrible hitter with a good glove. hardly an asset. teams don't trade for good defensive 1Bman with no stick. period. it's not like the catcher position where you can afford to carry a good defender with no stick on the 25man roster. Teams would rather sign a UIF with no stick (punto) who can play all 4 IF positions than trade for a bum like loney to back up 1B.....

and even if you trade Loney who are you expecting to get? a tub of doublebubble and a pair of cleets? If you played hardball you might be able to get a GM to throw in a package of peanuts..

Trading for Morse will be on the waiting list. The Napoli contract will be settled eventually, if not then Kotchman could the next candidate for 1B. Yes, the Nats are looking for LH bull pen help, something the sox do have. Personally I would keep the relief pitchers, and just wait and see what happens with the Napoli situation. Originally I was saying bail out on the Napoli deal cause of the injury assessmant, now with the 1B availability dwindling down the Sox will need to reword the Napoli contract.

I agree with you.  Morse is having a walk year and if the Sox are not going to extend him, it's just a waste of good players.  He's not gonna come cheap and we have to give up what the Nats want.  2013 1B FA market is a drought and Sox need to have a solution right now.  If Morse comes to play OF and 1B and Ben intends to trade away Ells for pitching, then this would make sense.  But just a year of Morse who never had played more than 146 games in his 8 year career and will cost a good lefty reliever and a prospect with upside is not the right answer for the Sox right now.

Or trade for Lars(lower cost alternative for Kotchman)--to split time with Gomez.

    Re: Mike Morse

A trade for Morse would be redundant unless the Sox walk away from Napoli. Morse could bring the RH power bat that can play 1B/OF that would fit nicely if Napoli is no longer considered.

On the other hand, if the Nats would take from the Sox excess bullpen resources and not include their top prospects then a deal could still happen and a Napoli/Morse/Victorino/Gomes/Kalish platoon or another follow-up trade would become more common.

The Sox are done unless they lose Napoli. They are not giving up their better prospects. Perhaps Cecchini and Miller for Morse. The problem is he will be in Tampa by next week---no timetable on Nap. If you're Nap's agent wait until Morse is gone--he's already seen one option sign-LaRoche.

An option out there might be a trade with the Marlins for Logan Morrison. Left Field and 1 B with decent power.

    1) Morse can play LF.

    2) Naps will probably miss 30-50 games and catch for 10-60 games..

    3) Papi may miss time.

           Yanks should offer Hughes.

With Hal cutting payroll there is little chance to retain Phil after this season.

Which explains why Cashman was shopping Phil this offseason.

Well that's it for now. See you in 34 days.

I think the Rays will get him.

The guy has about 35 HRs per 650 PAs with the Nats.

    In response to Softlaw1's comment:

and even if you trade Loney who are you expecting to get?

You are unable to comprehend more than reactionary one demensional approach to labor. The Red Sox would have paid nothing in players to get Loney. He would be a 3rd option back-up plan that could easily be dealt to a team who would pay all of his reamining 2M 2013 unpaid salary if incompetent Red Sox management found a better value and fit.

Loney would platoon, in the event it came down to begging for some 2nd rate bum like Morse. Morse isn't worth much, for anyone who has a clue about value, fit and market.

your still not following me.... loney sucks. Every player is a better "value&fit" than Loney. he offers nothing but leather and poor offense to the team and we would get NOTHING from trading him (if any team would consider taking him). why would we sign him in the first place? we don't need a "3rd option back-up plan" especially one of such terrible quality even a platoon role makes 0 sense because he sucks against LHP and RHP. i would stick iggy at 1B before i considered Loney.. He is a dumpster profile 1Bman with no stick and average defense. Just because you can pay 2 dollars for a bag of dogshit does not mean you should do it because "its a good backup backup plan". Get a clue softy

    1) Then Morse would be redundant to Gomes

    2) GM's don't usually trade for players ASSUMING another player will miss extended periods of time. Otherwise they leave the manager with line-up issues when everyone is healthy.  If Salty and Ross are on the roster I expect Napoli's catching duties to be limited to facing a tough LHP that Ross and Salty have had trouble with, so more on the 10 games than 60 side.

    3) Once again, GM's don't usually trade for players ASSUMING another player will miss extended periods of time.

For a team trying to build chemistry and competitiveness adding a new player to fill a position you already haveassigned to another player just does not make sense. It would be like a company hiring a FTE with strong accounting skills to cover for the existing company accountant during his two week vacation...or expecting him to be out sick...it just doesn't happen.

AP, Kuroda gone next season, if Hughes pitches well in 2013 he  stays.

The Yankees can't match what Seattle can offer for Morse.

And, that is one reason we have stunk the last few years. We counted on the "big 3" to stay healthy. It never happened.
