MLB suspends Papelbon for 3 games

NEW YORK — This release from Major League Baseball:

Boston Red Sox reliever Jonathan Papelbon has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions, which included making contact with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo, during the top of the ninth inning of his Club’s Saturday, June 4th game against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park.

Joe Garagiola Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards and On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Papelbon’s suspension was scheduled to begin being served during Boston’s game tonight against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, but he has elected to appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

the route of the problem is that the umpires are owned by the yankees so even when the yankees don't playing, the umps still favor the yankees.

Mr. Papelbon can use the 3 days to get his head on straight and his emotions intact. He is often a liability.

wow 3 games, really? because he bumped into an umpire? how bout the league starts suspending umpires for making so many terrible calls. That would send a message to the umps that they need to do a better job making the correct calls and stop being ignorant a-holes who think they know everything and god forbid someone questions them they get tossed.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if the Ump hadn't instigated it.  Paps had already gone back to the mound when the ump came out towards him.  In light of the terrible calls that were made as well as the instigation on the part of the Ump, there is no reason whatsoever for a 3 game suspension (1 game is fine) and this should be reduced upon appeal.  The rest will probably do Paps some good though, given his recent struggles (although those are inflated by Pedroia's error).

Very weak call by MLB. Here's video evidence of Papelbon's actions (it's at the 1:33 minute mark of the video).

I'm just saying this because it tells you how incredibly daft the NHL is...Papelbon shows up a lousy umpire, sort of engages the guy with a bump and Fracona separates him. He gets 3 games. Mr. Aaron Rome probably ends the career as we know it of Nathan Horton with a vicious blindside check with intent to injure..4 games....Nice job, MLB meet the NHL....3 games for tapping, 4 games for deadly assault.

Do you have any proof of this? Better yet, do you have any scant information of any kind along these lines, admissable or not? It sounds like the wayward Smiley army needs to regroup. The clown-a-holic continues his buffoonery. Nothing a fresh set of aliases can't help cure.

Better yet...break tradition and just take umpires out of calling balls and strikes. In general they do a good job, but sensors and computers will be more accurate and precise -- /> consistent. Will result in better pitching and batting.

Paps wanted to talk with Salty. The umpire assumed Paps was talking to him.

The right call is to suspend the UMP for 3 games.

Suspending pitchers and the way they let players appeal is a joke. Chances are he'll miss games he wasn't needed in and letting them appeal so they can be available for a crucial series just shows what a farce it really is.

Did you complain when Burnett apealed his '09 suspension?

I think it's a joke regardless of what team the player plays for, especially when it comes to a starting pitcher. Let's say they get suspended for 5 games. For a starting pitcher, that means they miss one start. Plus, with an appeal, they can pretty much assure themselves that the game they miss is against a lesser opponent.

Randazzo caused the entire ruckus.  Papelbon uttered something with his back turned to home plate.  Randazzo came charging out as if the wrong pizza was delivered to his house.  Fans come to see the baseball players, not the umpires.   We'd be better to have robots take their jobs.
