What a shame that Ace is apparently such a head case!!!  It makes me worried that we may not have a LONG relief guy???  When the Mariners are giving up on Carp & DAing him, that doesn't give me high hopes.  Sounds like a BAD DEAL!!!  The definition of KNEE JERK!  My God....  They knew he was a head case before this, so make the deal when you can get SOMETHING FOR HIM in the off season.  Not now!  Hold him, & deal from a position of strength!

The deep Mariner pitching staff has more reliable and less expensive options. I expect Seattle to trade Mike Carp for a prospect in the low minors with a high ceiling."

Alfredo Aceves wouldn't be much of a role model for Seattle's touted young pitchers. If the Mariners don't have room on the 40-man roster for Mike Carp, the M's don't have room on the 40-man roster for Aceves (although Aceves, unlike Carp, has one option remaining).

I don't anticipate that Seattle will get a great return for Carp, but the return is unlikely to be Aceves.

Aceves may not be worth the trouble considering our pen is deep with swing guys and deep with players at the back end.

The low price tag could entice the Ms, especially considering Aceves has closing experience (something MLB executives overrate).

Still, I think the trade is more likely to be Aceves + a good upside low level prospect (Manuel Margot?) if it happens at all.

His salary is non-guaranteed and he has options remaining.  The salary is low considering he can serve a double role (7th starter, 7th inning guy).  The Ms did just trade Vargas.  I think they would find modest value as Aceves considering that he has closing experience and can add starter depth.  WOrst case scenario , you can just cut him without absorbing any cost.

The Mariners would need to bump another player off the 40-man roster (which was one reason Seattle designated Mike Carp for assignment).

According to the Bill James Handbook, righthander Alfredo Aceves projects to be less valuable than righthander Hector Noesi, who may not make Seattle's 25-man roster this year.

Although I highly doubt Seattle has any interest in Aceves, I would note that the Mariners have a recent history of rehabilitating a Mexican pitcher with a head-case reputation. Last season lefthander Oliver Perez posted a 2.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 29.2 innings, holding opponents to a .243/.303/.324/.628 line. This offseason Perez, who is 16 months older than Aceves, landed a $1.5 million contract with the Mariners on the free agent market. Aceves at $2.65 million does not look like a bargain in comparison.

As I said, I wouldn't trade Aceves for Carp either.

I would think of trading Doubront plus one of Aceves, Miller, Morales or Mortensen for one better pitcher. That clears up room for Tazawa and moved DLR up one notch on the depth chart.

In short, we need more quality over quantity.
