The Red Sox could possibly obtain Mike Carp from the Mariners in exchange for Alfredo Aceves, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe opines. The Sox are one of several teams interested in Carp, though Aceves' trade value may be minimal thanks to his off-the-field behavior.

What a shame that Ace is apparently such a head case!!! It makes me worried that we may not have a LONG relief guy??? When the Mariners are giving up on Carp & DAing him, that doesn't give me high hopes. Sounds like a BAD DEAL!!! The definition of KNEE JERK! My God.... They knew he was a head case before this, so make the deal when you can get SOMETHING FOR HIM in the off season. Not now! Hold him, & deal from a position of strength!
DUMB MOVE!

That's merely the opinion of Globe columnist Nick Cafardo, who appears to be out-of-touch.As I responded to Cafardo's column on Monday:
"Why would Seattle trade Mike Carp for Alfredo Aceves, a 30-year-old pitcher with character issues, who would require a slot on the 40-man roster, making $2.65 million in the penultimate year of team control? The deep Mariner pitching staff has more reliable and less expensive options. I expect Seattle to trade Mike Carp for a prospect in the low minors with a high ceiling."
Alfredo Aceves wouldn't be much of a role model for Seattle's touted young pitchers. If the Mariners don't have room on the 40-man roster for Mike Carp, the M's don't have room on the 40-man roster for Aceves (although Aceves, unlike Carp, has one option remaining).
I don't anticipate that Seattle will get a great return for Carp, but the return is unlikely to be Aceves.

Possible long men: Morales, Tazawa, Mortensen, DLR, and Miller (doubtful, since he found his niche as a LH'd specialist. Maybe even Doubront, if someone else wins the 5 slot. -

I would make it. Aceves, on this roster, has more downside than upside. We have a deep pen and multiple capable swing guys (Morales, Tazawa, De La Rosa, Webster, Wilson).
Aceves may not be worth the trouble considering our pen is deep with swing guys and deep with players at the back end.
The low price tag could entice the Ms, especially considering Aceves has closing experience (something MLB executives overrate).
Still, I think the trade is more likely to be Aceves + a good upside low level prospect (Manuel Margot?) if it happens at all.

Wow ... I just posted to a Seattle forum that my longshot guess was Mike Carp to the Red Sox for Manuel Margot.I suspect the Mariners join the many teams who don't want Alfredo Aceves with his salary and baggage.

There is an outside chance that JBJ wins the platoon job in spring. I think that they would find him enough at-bats to ensure that they do not stunt his development. Due to JBJs defensive readiness and defensive versatility, he really only needs to bat better than .240 to be beat out platoon player x (Carp, Nava, Sweeney).
Assuming we are thinking small for platoon player x.

That might be the best Red Sox offer, but multiple teams reportedly are interested in Mike Carp.http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/multiple-teams-interested-in-mike-carp.html
A highly doubt the Mariners want a $2.65 million head case who would require a spot in the 40-man roster.

His salary is non-guaranteed and he has options remaining. The salary is low considering he can serve a double role (7th starter, 7th inning guy). The Ms did just trade Vargas. I think they would find modest value as Aceves considering that he has closing experience and can add starter depth. WOrst case scenario , you can just cut him without absorbing any cost. -

The Mariners have replaced lefthander Jason Vargas (a 0.8 WAR pitcher last year) with lefthander Joe Saunders (2.5 WAR in 2012).Alfredo Aceves would still require a spot on the 40-man roster (one status that caused Seattle to DFA Mike Carp).
I'm not sure where Aceves would fit on a 40-man roster that includes Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Saunders, Erasmo Ramirez, Blake Beavan, Charlie Furbush, Oliver Perez, Hector Noesi*, Josh Kinney, Lucas Luetge, Stephen Pryor, Carter Capps and Tom Wilhelmsen on MLB contracts with Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman standing by on minor league contracts and the Big Four -- Taijian Walker, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Brandon Maurer -- waiting in the wings.
* Hector Noesi stunk last season as Seattle's version of Daniel Bard, but the Bill James Handbook projects a 2013 FIP 0f 4.27 in 171 innings for Noesi and a FIP of 4.20 in 88 innings for Aceves. Noesi earns the league minimum salary.

Exactly. I really don't understand why Sox fans are so quick to throw Alfredo under the bus. Let's see how he does under a real manager before we trade him for a used rosin bag and a bag of balls. Under Francona he was one of the best swing men in the game. And I don't recall hearing anything about character issues before Bobby V came on board. -

I don't anticipate this happening, although I do foresee Aceves not being on the 25 man roster come opening day.
The Sox currently have 10 guys for 7 jobs and some of them have to go. As it stands now I would guess roster locks being:
- Hanrahan
- Bailey (barring a trade)
- Uehara
- Breslow
- Morales (barring a trade)
- Miller
leaving these guys to fight for the last spot:
- Bard (could start season in AAA)
- Tazawa (if he has options will start in AAA)
- Mortensen
- Aceves
My guess is Mortensen wins the last spot and Aceves is sent packing.
Alternatively, maybe a big deal involving 2 of these 10 guys and Doubront for a #2 or 3 starter to strengthen the rotation??

Although I highly doubt Seattle has any interest in Aceves, I would note that the Mariners have a recent history of rehabilitating a Mexican pitcher with a head-case reputation. Last season lefthander Oliver Perez posted a 2.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 29.2 innings, holding opponents to a .243/.303/.324/.628 line. This offseason Perez, who is 16 months older than Aceves, landed a $1.5 million contract with the Mariners on the free agent market. Aceves at $2.65 million does not look like a bargain in comparison.

This is just silly talk Hill. He would easily make the 25 roster and probably start. He is definitely more valuable then at least one person on the 40 man. The reason Carp got the ax was because of the surplus of people matching his skill not because there are 40 players better than him. Aceves for Carp would be a steal of a pure talent stand point. To compare Perez to Aceves is laughable. You are comparing someone who had years of failure and was out of baseball to a fairly decent pitcher. -

As I said, I wouldn't trade Aceves for Carp either.I would think of trading Doubront plus one of Aceves, Miller, Morales or Mortensen for one better pitcher. That clears up room for Tazawa and moved DLR up one notch on the depth chart.
In short, we need more quality over quantity.

I agree, we have both been saying this forever. Stocking the team with depth through a bunch of average players won't help our present situation much.
It certainly doesn't help moving forward either. We need a couple smart trades before really improving our clubs future. Fortunately I think any number of teams could win our division and/or slide into the PS this year.
