    Mookie Betts isn't Human

The outrageous emergence of Betts from obscurity to elite prospect status is reaching runaway train status. It’s too early in 2014 to draw many conclusions, but it’s also virtually impossible to ignore what he’s doing. With his 2-for-4 performance on Saturday for Double-A Portland that included a double, a sac fly and his third steal of the season, he now has a laughable line of .469/.514/.750.

“Mookie Betts . . . isn’t human,” concluded Salem broadcaster Evan Lepler.

Betts reached base in his last 30 games of 2013 with High-A Salem, posting a .418/.496/.655 line with 15 extra-base hits, 16 walks and nine strikeouts during that time, and he’s reached base in his first eight games of this season (getting on base multiple times in seven of his first eight contests). So, he now has a streak dating to last year of 38 straight games reaching base, during which time he has a line of .430/.500/.676 with 21 extra-base hits, 20 walks, 12 strikeouts and 15 steals in 18 attempts.

Again: Over roughly a quarter of a season in which he’s been one of the youngest players in two leagues, he’s hitting .430 with a .500 OBP and .676 slugging mark.

Another top prospect in the RS system. What a surprise? Have to love what RS are doing. Got away from it a bit after 07 WS. Trading the likes of Rizzo / Masterson, but now looks like RS are commited to building from within and staying away from tose 7-10 FA conracts the Yanks are so fod of which come back to bite you in the end Arod / CC / Tex, and won't be long before we are saying same things about McCann / Ells contracts.

I don't think anyone would disagree that there's cause for concern there but it's a long way from, the troll's statement that "Pedey is done for the year".

You'd probably want to add Lava at 1B and Vazquez at catcher too, right BILL?

    Re: Mookie Betts isn't Human

I'm sorry but I can't take anyone serious who is calling for Betts to be called up.

A.) he hasn't even played in 10 games above single A yet

B.) we've seen players who perform well in AA get creamed in the MLB (JBJ) it is obviously

         too large a jump.

c.)  There are only 6 players younger than him in the level he is playing at now

d.) He is blocked by Pedey, calling him up now would be setting him up for failure.  Imagine        doing what the Sox did to JBJ except without a clear path to a long term position.  That         could hurt his trade value as well.

Like I said, Just because he is putting up stats in AA doesn't mean he is ready for the big show.  He's not a Phenom like Bogaerts...kids playing and playing well at 21 in MLB is pretty rare.  We would be setting him up for failure, it makes zero sense.

Holt is likely the next candidate to replace Pedroia, he has proven he can play the position and hit at the MLB level, and he is tearing the cover off the ball too at a HIGER level than Betts is.

There is always that " year of control " thing. We are always hesitant to bring up the prospects. Personally , I would rather see the kids than some of the mediocre veterans that we tend to accumulate.

And if he doesn't hit immediately in the major leagues after jumping straight from Double-A, people can label him a bust, can't hit, etc. as many did with JBJ over the past year.

Considering that Betts has played all of 9 games in Portland, that's almost a guarantee, if they call him up.

The "We want the kids" crowd need to relax a little...

The year of control thing isn't even a thing here.  He is too far away, if he was in Pawtucket putting up these numbers then this would be relevant.

Marreno has also put up oustanding numbers offensively and has a better fielding percentage at SS than Bogy or Herrera ever did in the minors.

How about a Grady, Shane and JBJ OF, with Marreno at SS, Bogy back at 3B and Betts at 2B if Pede goes down.  That would certainly give everyone something to talk about if it worked out so soon.
