RSF4 let me preface the following by saying their is no bigger fan of Beckett than BurritoT. But let me ask you this, how did he come through? 6 innings with a one run lead... Tito took out a highly effective pitcher, the Ace, who's arm was well rested. This game was no ordinary game, it was of the highest importance. Isn't "coming through" 8 innings of stellar performance?

Don't any here see the danger that is Tito and the starting staff? Beckett could pitch 1,000 6 inning games and still lose every single one of them as the pen gives it all away.

Yes Beckett did all that he was asked today, but he was not asked to do enough. It was of high risk to pull him.

I am not negative, nor bashing - I am simply speaking to one of the greatest factors to this team's shortcomings. There can be no "Beckett comes through" 6 inning games against Verlander, Sabathia, Lee, or Halliday.

I remain flabergasted Tito was willing to risk wasting a solid pitching performance to the bullpen yet again,

    Go Boston!

    Bad ankle.
    Huge game.
    109 pitches.

If he goes 7, he risks maybe 130 pitches off a shaky ankle.
They win or lose as a team.

If his ankle is such a risk than pull him after 5, whats the difference?

Play-off game scenerio:  Josh & Jon each pitch 6 shutout innings, the opposing teams starter goes 8 innings giving up 2 runs. End result 3-2 victory by the opposition.

Re: My main man Beckett comes through

    Pitch count/ankle/layoff determined exit.
Beckett was at 87 pitches after 5 frames. Were it not for the magnitude of this game, Tito might have taken him out after 5. Not a good idea to push a pitcher with a questionable ankle after an 11-day layoff.

The lack of activity may have been why Josh had no control over his two-seamer when trying to go inside to lefties. That escalated his pitch count.
He pulled him at the right time, although Josh wasn't jumping for joy at the decision.

Don't sell Tito short once the PO's begin. He will manage differently, as he always has in Post Season play. Tito will not grind his pitchers down during the season, unless it's a short-term emergency. But he will ask for more in October.

We just need that ankle to cooperate for about 5-6 more weeks and then he can rest it all winter! Last night was certainly huge!  Paps was great also.

It was  a key game, and we won... especially with all that has happened a win is a win should be the best thing overall.

Bickering about semantics? No way. We won in a truly must win situation. At this point I really don't care how, we just need to keep winning, day by day, worry about tomorrow's game after today....you all know the drill.

Burrito's point that our pitchers in general have not been going deep enough in games is certainly a valid one, though not really applicable to Beckett last night.  It would be really nice if Lester could give us at least 7 strong innings today.

Beckett, Aceves, Bard and Pap did a great job.  This is what we need when guys like Wake, Lackey and hopefully someone other than Weiland pitches.  Aviles in the lineup is also a boost offensively over Lowrie who should be backing Mike up at any position.

Good, much needed win, today along with every game remaining needs this kind of effort.

Hfxsoxnut your are entirely correct. I have been chirping about this since late July... and that is when the team was winning seemingly every game. I foresaw an issue that might be an Achilles heal. Go Boston!

Another needless catfight over nothing. Most teams now are happy with six innings out of their starter. That is why you have relief specialists for the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Every team is structured in this manner. All year long this is how Tito has used the bullpen. What change it. It did however give Burrito some entertainment to be the "Devil's Advocate" on a boring night in Cambodia. Some posters are never happy unless they are miserable.

I'd say he pitched great because he obviously wasn't his stellar self all around. But he did have a bummed ankle for one, and the 11 days off played a factor. What I really liked about his performance is he got out of a lot of jams. All 7 of his K's were huge huge huge strikeouts. To me, thats what defined his performance. I have to say he was great ! And it was a joy to watch in the stands !!!!

Who besides Lester and Beckett can we depend on?  Are they enough?  Not in a seven games.  Who else is going to step up? We will probably hold on but in the playoffs who can we count on but the two above.

Well at least we can enjoy the trip to the playoffs. Sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination. With so many injuries I am not expecting a rose garden. Fortunately I am not one of those fans that feels entitled to a trophy every year.

I agree with you...the bullpen has been iffy for the sox as of late. I could have cried when they put Bard out there last night..and although it turned out okay...it could just have easily gone the other way. ( although in fairness it seems that Bard's mechanical issues were addressed). I thought it was a risk.given the importance of the game. The reality is the starters need to give more innings..I thought Beckett did what he needed to do..it just would have been nice if he could have gone another inning. I guess the bottom line is that they won..and Lester should give them a good show today.

Just maybe Tito looked past the Bard of recent days and felt that he would revert back to the pitcher that he was all season. Perhaps to corrected his mechanics and in turn control after studying video. We are just fans.

Even the first inning was not as bad as it looked. The HR was a Fenway HR if I ever saw one. Beckett is back. The Sox are back on track. We win the nest 2 and coast into the playoffs as a highly confident team.

Not quite Moon. Beckett was throwing 93 MPH and had no control of his two-seamer. That is not Beckett.
Hopefully it's just 11-day rust, but I doubt the reduced velocity was due to that. If it's the ankle, the difference between throwing 93 to 94 is big when your command isn't great. And he normally throws 94 like clockwork. This was on a night when Bard was at 98 mph and Paps 96-97. So, it wasn't the gun. And It likely wasn't the lay-off, as he would have come out stronger.

There's reason for concern. His next outing will likely tell whether his ankle is gonna be an on-going issue.
