Napoli..................do you sign him next year?

    Mike Napoli - 1B - Red Sox

Impending free agent Mike Napoli said Thursday that he wants to return to the Red Sox.

Napoli had to settle for a one-year, $5 million contract after his multi-year deal broke down due to a chronic hip condition. The hip hasn't been an issue, though, and he's been productive, batting .259/.360/.482 with 23 homers and 92 RBI during the regular season and slugging two homers over the last three ALCS games. Napoli, who turns 32 later this month, should get his multi-year deal this winter, and it could come from Boston after they came up short in the bidding for Jose Abreu.

Napoli would be the best choice so far.  I think Sox and Naps will agree to an extention before Ben even QOs Naps.

    He's streaky. But he's a gamer.

It would be wise to at least consider it.

I don't know who I'd replace him with, so right now , I'd say yes.

A long term contract is out, though.

I think Naps is making 13 Million this Season, after reaching all the incentives.

Nothing more than 2 years due to the hip.

3rd year as a team option is fine.

If he says no, offer a 1 year QO and let the chips fall...

Can you put riders in his contract regarding his hip health?  Or games played incentives... something like that?

They had a clause in Lackey's deal like that, so yeah they can, but maybe Napoli won't accept it, if he can get one without it from another team.

I'd give him an offer of $25M/2 with incentives based on PAs that could bring him to $28M/2. The 3rd year club option at $11M with a club buyout of $2M, making his minimum deal worth $27M/2 and tops at $30M/2 of $41M/3.

He'll make more with qualifying offer. 28-30 million my guess, 2 years.

Nobody will ever fill Papi's shoes. We'll probably need two big upgrades when he finally hangs 'em up.

what make you think he ll strike out more as a DH.  When Papi was hurt, Napoli struck out 9 times out of 36 AB.  If we try to match the total of his 459 AB's this year, he would only struck out around 110's times!!!

You are absolutely correct.  Power numbers or naught, contact hitter is first priority when considering candidates for DH.  League-leading-strikeouts does not cut it.

Furthermore, the Sox should begin strategizing and shopping for a power-hitter who consistently makes contact, either for 1B or LF with Nava/Carp platooning at 1B.

Thank you Mike Napoli for what you have contributed thus far to the Sox and what you may yet contribute to the Sox quest for a World Series Championship, but get your luggage ready because the Sox will be moving forward in 2014 without your services.  Thanks again and Adios.

And for those who inevitably will ask, 'who do you see as his replacement?', I would certainly take a close look at Paul Konerko.  Yes, he did have a 'down' year in 2013, and yes he is 37 years-old, but if you look at his numbers for 2010, 2011, and 2012, you might wonder if, in spite of 2013, he might have enough left in the tank to have one last 'hurrah' year at Fenway.  And Konerko loves to hit at Fenway, which his numbers at Fenway throughout his career support.  With the signing of Abreu by the White Sox, Konerko who is a FA is certainly not resigning with Chicago.

    Here are some career averages.

Napoli strikes out 161 per year or 31% of his at bats, Konerko 96 SO per year or 16% of his at bats.,

    BA, Napoli .259, Konerko .281,

    RBI, Napoli 88, Konerko 99

HR ave, Napoli 32, Konerko 31,

    OBP, Napoli .357, Konerko .356

    SLG, Napoli .502, Konerko .491

I'm not saying the Sox should rush out and sign Konerko, but I am saying that there are optional choices that are worth scrutinizing before signing Napoli to a $12M/year deal for 2 or 3 years.

I'll take 300 Ks as long as my middle oder guys hit 20+ Hrs, gets 90+ RBis and has an OBP over .350.

I'd prefer much better than Naps line, but he's OK as a number 6 hitter.

I love Napoli, although he had me worried for a while there.

One of those guys who can really come through in a big moment, with something like a game-winning bomb off Verlander.
