The Free Agent shopping list (Not counting current Red Sox players) could be summed up in one name:  Mike Napoli

To that end, Ryan Ludwick as a RH power hitter for a year or 2 at DH would probably work out well also. He can also play in LF in Fenway, presumably. I always go back to if Manny could do it, most should be able to. Manny was NEVER a good fielder, Fenway made him look decent.

    13:$5M mutual option ($0.5M buyout)

He has more balanced splits than Ross, and will probably cost about the same. He will be 35 next July, so would just be a short-term fix.

Re: Newest Free Agent List By Position

The Red Sox won't be title contenders in 2013, but that doesn't mean they need to waive the white flag and can't be playoff qualifitying contenders.

So, you want the Sox to do what you bash the Rays for doing- compete but not come close to winning it all?

Name the veteran pitcher who the Red Sox should acquire, with the resume and 3 year cost of Schilling. He doesn't exist in this market. It's Felix, and that's it.

I never said there was another schilling around today. My point was that when we are close enough to be one big starter away from a strong chance at a ring, the age issue is not as big of a deal as you seem to be saying it is. You continually say we should only go after young players. You never mentioned exceptions until this recent VMart idea.

If we got close to competing for ring, there are several pitchers who could put us over the top by pitching well late into their careers... maybe not as great as schilling, but good enough to tip the balance. Most are not available via trade, but a year or two before Schill was traded, nobody expected him to be dealt.

Some are clearly not as good as felix, but they'd cost way less in prospects and some in contract cost as well compared to Felix...

Verlander, Cain, Shields (on the block this winter), Lee, Halladay, Haren, Lincecum, and maybe a few more.

Things may change before now and winter 2014, when we may be looking for a wiley vet.

There are also some young starters who would be very hard to trade for, but never the less, are high impact players who most of whom are under team control for many years:

Gallardo, Gio Gonzalez, Bumgarner, Cuerto, and Sale (I'll assume Stasburg is untouchable.)

    Brian McCann (29) - $12MM club option with a $500K buyout

    Jason Giambi (42)

    Omar Vizquel (46)

    Mark Reynolds (29) - $11MM club option with a $500K buyout

    Juan Pierre (35)

    Melky Cabrera (28)

    Bobby Abreu (39)

    Bartolo Colon (40)

    Derek Lowe (40)

    Jamie Moyer (50)

    Mariano Rivera (43)

    Miguel Batista (42)

    Dontrelle Willis (31)

Sign these players, most to minor league contracts, and let them come in and compete for jobs. The money we save next season can help pay for Liverpool.

In Response to Re: Newest Free Agent List By Position:
My choice Napoli, flexibility in 3 positions, Catcher, Firstbase, and DH. Teams have to start thinking this way. More bang for the buck. Plus Righthanded Power hitter, which Fenway has always been tailored made for.

Napoli is not a good defensive catcher (esp with CERA-related skills  figured in). He's not worth the money and barely an upgrade over Salty (.223 BA, more K's than games played, 19% CS rate...).
