This is why I don't want to sign Napoli or Swisher..... what is the point? And these types of players will only be in the way in 2014 and afterward as the team becomes competitive again.

This FA is really lacking any game breakers. The only every day player is Hamilton and he would be a high risk for mor than 3 years. The pitching has no #1 or 2 starters and few RP of consequence.

    BORING

    Exactly, Burr.

If we are going to sign anyone, they should be players who can improve: McCarthy, Marcum, or Pagan.

Players can help us improve in 2013, but will still be strong or stronger in 2014 and 2015.

Swiaher and Napoli are good players, but neither is a great player.  It is EXTERMELY unlikely either one will "be in the way" in 2 years.  What is much, much more likely is that not enough better options will get in the way to displace them.

This is free agency today.  Teams lock up star players young and for a long time and what is left is players like Swisher and Napoli.   Who is everyone anxious for in 2013's free agency class?  Or do fans actually think that Bogaerts, Bradley, Barnes and Webster will ALL becoe contributing major leaguers and future all stars at the same time?   Statistically,  two of those 4 will be everyday major leaguers, and only one of those two will be any good.  And even that might not happen in 2014.

And really, the Sox need to make some free agent moves because their fanbase is not going to sit around for 2 or 3 eyars to see which of their monor leaguers was worthwhile, assuming any of them are at all....

Let's not sign Hamilton or Greinke or Napoli or Swisher. Let's ignore them and say this is a weak free agent class.  Let's make every excuse for Ben C.  Let's save John Henry money. Let's wait for a better free agent class.  Who cares if we are competitive in 2013  ?  It is just a " bridge year ." After all , we will have a great team in 2014 and beyond,  when our " kids " blossom into stars. And  if they don't , we will always have another crop of " kids " coming along.  We can string ourselves along for quite a while with this thinking.  It will continue to be interesting for the would- be G.M.s and fantasy experts, while the Red Sox continue to struggle.   Don't take a risk and spend money on the top players.  Let other teams do that,  while we wait for the right moment.  This seems to be the thinking of many of our resident " experts ."   Good luck with that.

Maybe that is why salaries are so high ... because it is an un-written rule that you MUST sign free-agents every year. We just had to unload our two biggest signings last summer if you recall. When someone like Napoli talks 4 years then you walk away, simple.

And sorry but Swisher sucks in my opinion.

Greinke is not the pitcher spend money on.. we should try to trade for someone who costs less, but who can help us for many years going forward. Never forget that we can afford to sign anyone we want, so trading for a pitcher and seeing how he performs at Fenway before you give him a large extension is a luxury we have and most teams do not.

Swisher or Napoli wouldnt get in the way. I think the Sox will sign napoli and after papi is done in 2 years, and IF we get a long term solution at 1b, he can DH.

Napoli's done great at Fenway Park in 24 career games, including the postseason. He has a .307/.404/.733 line with nine home runs and 20 RBIs in 75 at-bats.  mlb.com

24 career games at Fen? Yes he must be signed!  $10 million per year for 4 years would be insulting! Lets ink him to 5 years and $13 million per.

Not so much an unwritten rule, but it certainly is a demand from the fans.

Free agency is not a good thing, and never will be.  It really serves two purposes.  1 - its PR.  It is a public show to your fanbase you want to win.  After all, nothjing says commitment like a 4 year multimillion dollar contract.  and 2 - it keeps the plauers union from filing lawsuits.  Every time there is a 48 hour stretch with n free agent signings, you can bet a pool of agents will get together and start throwing around the "C" word.

The thing about free agents is, the guys who cost the most and are the most likely to succeed will soon turn into the biggest busts.  Look at A-Rod.  And we should all be in "wait and see" mdoe with Pujols and Votto, too.  No way either player lives up to those deals.

Four years on Swisher and/or Napoli?  I do either assuming money is not unreasonable.  What is Napoli saking for?

THe important thing here is that he manages to find this message board culpable for anything the team does.

Yes, the sarcastic "experts" at the end really helps drill home the point that he has lost all touch with reality, and yet still thinks of himself as the island of sanity

And the REALLY STUPID PART is that he is actually not alone in this behavior.

I need some help developing an emoticon that looks like a frustrated guy pointing a gun at his on head.  Any thoughts?

So far the off season is a disaster and if signing Napoli is all they can come up with - then we are in major trouble.

Napoli does nothing to improve this team.    Wasting time and effort going after him.

GOMES?!  You have to be kidding.  That guy is terrible.  All he does is slow down the opportunity for younger guys

At least younger guys can improve - Gomes is terrible and will always be terrible.  No chance of improving.  NONE.

Yeah, but Ive never used those as reasons to sign someone. Napoli has a good swing for Fenway. RH power pull hitters do well there. Gomes and Napoli would hit good there. I could care less what a player does against us. Were not going to be pitching to them if we sign them.

southpaw that is lame to sign a player just because he has good numbers over a whopping 24 game period. You need to check your brain. We don;t need him.

    They need pitching.

Did you not watch last season?  Lost in Tibet?  On a pilgrimage?

    They NEED PITCHING.

Signing mediocre, limited ball players just to have some new names on the roster is reminiscent of dark days of Red Sox history.
