no hall of fame for George Stienbrenner!!!!

    Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
George Steinbrenner finishes a half-dozen votes short of HOF induction. I'd bet he wouldn't have been thrilled that Torre got in before him.

What did Steinbrenner ever do for baseball besides ruin it?

Because of Steinbrenner, salaries are beyond ridiculous.

Baseball Salaries got really out of Whack when AROD signed the deal with Texas, raising the highest Salary from 17MM per year to 25MM per year....so saying single handed is definitely wrong....George was a good businessman who paid what the market required to make his team a winner....I dont think he routinely overpaid for players...and as much as I despise the Yankees and at time Steinbrenner there were many times I wished he was the Sox owner.

Re: no hall of fame for George Stienbrenner!!!!

He was a rich kid who grew up to be a rich man who didn't respect his players or, I contend, the game.

    Plus he was a crminal:

Campaign contributions to Nixon and pardon [edit]

The "convicted" part of Billy Martin's famous 1978 "liar and convicted" comment referred to Steinbrenner's connection to Richard Nixon; in 1974, Steinbrenner pled guilty to making illegal contributions to Nixon's re-election campaign, and to a felony charge of obstruction of justice.[24] He was personally fined $15,000 and his company was assessed an additional $20,000. On November 27 of that year, MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended him for two years, but later commuted it to fifteen months. Ronald Reagan pardoned Steinbrenner in January 1989, one of the final acts of his presidency.

    Disagree.

Salaries went up because of TV and free agency, both of which Steinbrenner had nothing to do with. Because of TV, revenues have kept going up since the 1970s. That drove up salaries. Because the Yankees were in New York, which is the biggest market in the country, the Yankees had more revenue, hence the ability to pay higher salaries. Whoever owned the Yankees since the 1970s would have paid higher salaries.

And don't think for one minute that the Yankees weren't profitable. Some Yankees fans like to portray Steinbrenner as he'd rather win than make money. There's no doubt he wanted to win. But he never had to make that choice. He was a smart businessman. He had high payrolls because he had the revenue to pay high salaries and still be profitable.

Steinbrenner took advantage of free agency, but he's not the reason there is free agency. And if you don't like it, take a look at how owners treated players in days the reserve clause. As much as we as fans might not like free agency because teams don't stay together, you can't really say the old system in any way was fair.

While there are things Steinbrenner did -- he was suspended -- in the end, he deserves the HOF some day.
