I noticed that Linares had an invite too. But no Brentz...

I wonder if Linares will get a real shot this year.
I don't get why they seem down on him.

I don't get it either. He seems to be a very good outfielder with a decent arm, and he's hit at the higher levels of the minor leagues. Maybe it's his age... -

I think it is all about him not being on the 40 man roster. To move him onto it before he needs to be there would mean we have to drop someone else. That's the balance-tipper.

I get the 40 man roster thing, but they had a chance to put him on the 40 man this winter and protected Alex Hassan instead. -

I'm not sure what the Hassan situation was, but sometimes I think GMs choose to put a lesser player on the 40 man, because his time is up. If it meant losing Hassan to put Linares on the 40 man before he needed to be on it, I can see the reasoning. I'm not sure how the time thing works, but maybe that's the reason.Hassan is not a bad player.

Although Linares has shown more power than Hassan, AH has shown he has a better track record of getting on base consistantly...

That was a Bill James decision. There will be more according to JH. -

There are two issues here - one debatable, the other not:- Debatable: should Linares be given a chance to play for the big team?
- Not debatable: if Linares is not to be given a chance yet, don't waste a 40-man roster on him

He is pretty old. He has been basically labeled as a career minor leaguer. -

Well put. I think Linares needs to do better than just have a gret ST; he needs to have a few good months in AAA before he gets the nod. He may also have to be doing better than Brentz as well.
I like this kid and hope he gets a look someday soon.

The mistake Red Sox upper management made was buying high and selling low based upon a snap shot of players that are popular or unpopular with an overwhelming majority of Red Sox fans. As with this sanitized bubble Board, there couldn't be any roadmap to poor value and fit players than a snap shot of popular and unpopular players.
To the extent they learn to sell high and bid low and utilize the trade market with regard to popular and unpopular fanbase player profiles, the more games they will win on average from season to season. Needless to say, after years of InEpstein and Cherry and incomptent middlge management and zero playoff wins for nearly a half a billion dollars spent on unproductive labor, it is truly laughable that they are going on with over 150 million in 2013 labor costs for what amounts to old rejects and veteran players who treat the game of baseball as a platform to make the most money without any player accoutability for showing up for work and producing over a season.
Red Sox upper management needs to hire middle management who understands age, medical science, basis statistics, and athletes who have enough character to hold themselves accoutable to the team's performance. Despite getting rid of a veteran leadership cancer like Beckett, the Red Sox have foolishly chosen to retain veteran player leadership cancers like Ellsbury who don't hold themselves accoutable to the team. This renders management impotent because of the MLBPA. Accoutability must come from within the players, and this requires veteran players who police themselves and goes to management to get rid of mercenary loser profiles who will always have careers in team sports that reflect what losers are.
In the minors, they have been incompetent in player development because of false assumptions about position value, impairing their judgment on fit and creating an imbalance in comprehensive position and sillset development. Bogaerts is the latest example of such incompetence, which is the attempt to create a "slugging SS". Given that middle management whiffed on a young OF RH slugger, Bogaerts should already be developing as a Left Fielder.
There is nothing about the 2013 Red Sox that indicates anything more than a bubble playoff team that is not even remotely a championship contender. And one look at the 2013 payroll and the 40 man roster says 150 million plus of incompetence.

So... this is why you advocated extending VMart. Hmmmm.....
(BTW, we got Barnes and Owens as draft comp for losing VMart, and used some the money saved on AGon, who helped us to dump your old pal CC, Beckett and Punto and bring in a couple of nice young arms .)

Released last year, I'm pretty sure.
