Re: Oriole and Tampa Bay pitching carries them into and out of playoffs

    Not quite right.

The Rays hitting stayed weak the entire season, but their pitching, the best in MLB, still carried them to 90 wins, 2 more than two playoff teams with 88 each--St Louis and Detroit.

The Orioles had decent pitching and so-so hitting, but what they did have was, for lack of a better term, good luck.  They lost two early season extra inning games, then won 16 in a row.  I completely agree those 16 wins a row could well have been because of brilliant managing, heroic hitting, and gritty pitching, but most statisticians would say luck was a factor.  FWIW, Napoleon used to say he preferred generals who were lucky over those who were merely smart.

In any case, this is the first time in quite a while the Orioles have been in the playoffs, and it appears they did so without benefit of superior hitting or pitching.  What they were good at was winning games, one way or the other.  Peter Angelos, their owner, should avoid making any public statements about how the franchise has turned a corner, etc.
