    By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

FORT MYERS, Fla. — David Ortiz graduated to soft toss on Wednesday, taking 50 swings at balls flipped to him by coaching staff assistant Ino Guerrero.

Head athletic trainer Rick Jameyson and physical therapist Dan Dyrek were on hand to monitor Ortiz, who on Tuesday took 50 swings at balls on a tee. Jim Rice watched, too.

Ortiz looked to be cutting loose with his swings and left the batting cage walking normally. The Red Sox are in the process of building Ortiz back up after a nine-day layoff because of inflammation in his heels, a residual of the Achilles tendon injury he had last season.

Ortiz will eventually get to batting practice on the field and then running the bases, which was when his last setback occurred. If he is able to run the bases, Ortiz would then play in his first game this spring.

Based on his recent progress there is at least a small chance chance Ortiz will play in a game before the Sox break camp on March 30. It is likely he will need 30-50 plate appearances before he is ready to rejoin the Red Sox. Those could come in extended spring training and/or minor league games.

....On Thursday, Ortiz swung in the batting cage for the third straight day and also participated in some other activities.

"We're going to continue to work off of him each and every day," said manager John Farrell. "They'll be some more strength training and that type of thing that's part inside today. So far, so good."

Hurts his heels according to the basher.

    Oh but he did.

Ortiz posted this picture on his twitter not quite bench pressing but weight lifting none the less

    Re: Ortiz update

David Ortiz will begin the season on the disabled list as he works his way back from pain in both of his Achilles heels, but he’s inching closer to returning to game action.

According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, Red Sox manager John Farrell said today that Ortiz will travel with the team to New York to continue his rehab before returning to Fort Myers for the week of April 8. The hope is that he’ll make enough progress by then to be ready to take live batting practice or play in minor league games.

Ortiz’s running program remains a work in progress, as he’s currently limited to straight-ahead running and agility drills. He’ll need to start making cuts and running the bases before being cleared for an official minor league rehab assignment.

Until Ortiz is ready to return, the Red Sox are expected to go with Jonny Gomes as their primary designated hitter and rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. as their starting left fielder.

    In response to BurritoT-'s comment:

No idea why they signed him when he couldn't walk. As someone said on the radio the other day it was as much a PR move as a baseball move. They didn't want to listen to ortiz whine about respect all winter and possible go play elsewhere because the fans would be upset - to which most of us wouldn't especialy once we saw him sitting on the DL until July.

That doesn't make sense. They don't sign players to keep the fans happy. There's a ground swell of fans complaining about him being signed.

They signed him because they know he CAN still hit.

1:05 J, that is, unless theyve changed it. But even so, YES will need two hours to explain to NYY fans how Yankee greatness will triumph, and how the team will still be ok in spite of the ground crumbling around them. Pike is a closet NYY fan, and is hoping for 3 hours.
