He claims he never knew about the atrocities? Has he been living under a rock for 40 years? Who DOESN'T KNOW about Fidel Castro? I'm not buying what he's selling.

There are some people on here who apparently don't know about Castro.  Either that or they choose to ignore the atrocities because they agree with his politics.

Choice for dgale - living in Cuba under Castro or living in Haiti under Baby Doc.

Too hard.  A simpler choice - living in Cuba under Castro or living in Cuba under Battista.  Under Castro, you get to go to school and to the doctor.  Under Battista, you get to go to school and to the doctor if you're friends with Battista - who never committed any atrocities.

I don't think it is a good defense of something that is wrong by pointing out something that is worse.

    Re: Ozzie suspended five games....

Well dgale, you kind of missed the point.  It's real easy to live in the good ol USA where even in the worst of times, the living is pretty easy, and pass judgment.  But literally, in the examples that I put forward, beggars can't be choosy.  Say what you want about Castro, but it's not like he overthrew the Government of a country where everyone was prospering.  The Cuban Ex-pats in Miami hate him because they were the ones that were friends of Battista.  And if they were the ones that were corrupt then they had connections to those that did.

And yeah, people want to flee Cuba.  But they want to flee Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and a lot of other places.

Castro wasn't bad because he was a communist or because he committed atrocities and tortured his own people.  Heck some of our best friends have committed atrocities a whole lot worse.  He was "bad" because 1) he was aligned with the Soviet Union, and 2) Because he wouldn't let American investors into Cuba.

Don't forget, big bad Saddam was our good buddy while he was gassing Iranians.  It was only when he invaded a country that we didn't want him to (and forgot to tell him not to) that he became our enemy.

    Re: Ozzie suspended five games....

    DirtyWaterLover,

I understand your point about the parallels to the Battista regime, but you are generalizing.  While some in the Miami cuban community are ex-Battista cronies, most are not.  They were just normal people caught up in the communist revolution mess.  Regardless of initial intentions (and Battista was bad), revolutions devolve into creating their own classes of cronies (specially communists), into attacks on people with academic arguments, and a general attitude that "anybody who disagrees with us must be against us".  A lot of innocent people lose their freedom and their livelyhood in the process.

As to your 3rd paragraph, I am sure you don't want to say that Castro was not bad.  He certainly was very bad to his people.  Of course, we deal with a lot of bad dictators that we hardly mind because they are "our" bad characters (Battista was a case in point).

The dumb idea is that, our policies towards Cuba (strongly advocated by the Cuban American community) has been the best thing that ever happened to Castro.  Isolating Cuba basically assured Castro that he can stay in power unchallenged.  Does anybody think that Castro would have been in power now if Cuba was open and engaged with the rest of the world. The forces of modernety would have done him in, like it did in Eastern Europe.  Ironically, these people being so vocal protesting Ozzie's dumb statement, are their own worst enemy.
