In Response to Re: Papi shutting it down? : Hetch, I'm also using my own physical experience with injuries (even now). Bursitis of the heel, plantar fasica, i have it, another guy on my current team has it. We play, and we seem to do ok by ourselves. Papi is a lot younger, and is a DH. I just don't see him being so hurt that he can't play or hit. He can hit and still have that condition. In fact, when he comes back, he will still have the same condition he had a week ago.

    Danny,

You still do not get my reasoning in that every case of Bursitis, plantar what ever can vary in intensity just like cracked or broken ribs, just like everyone's ability to handle or tolerate pain. As I said, I had Bursitis in my knee just a few years ago and couldn't bend my knee, never mind putting any weight on it. If Papi's case is that intense how can he stand on his heal to swing a bat, never the less run the bases. I don't know how much more I can explain it.

A family member of mine is a Podiatrist and although this type of condition isn't his specialty he knows enough after years in medical school to agree with my point of view. Just because you have a similar condition doesn't mean yours is similar to Papis. His might be much worse than yours. Someone might have Cancer, does that make each case of cancer the same ? No, there are different levels of the disease just like any medical condition.

Hetch, I don't doubt the difference in pain tolerance for different people, but I can tell you that if a MLB player has a hangnail they go on the 15-day DL faster than you can say "take a motrin." I would love to have put on a walking boot, taken some time off, and be a DH. It's luxury. You are giving the benefit of the doubt more credence than you need to on this subject.
If you look at thousands of threads and posts on this forum you will soon learn that many posters think that they know more than doctors. Doctors need eight plus years of training to get their license and are born with exceptional intelligence and go the best schools and colleges that are available at a huge personal cost. The Red Sox can afford to hire the very best of these rare specialists and take all necessary precautions when a players earning $10+ mil. are involved. It is ridiculous for any of us to assume that we know more on diagnosing the ailments to Bucholz, Youk, or Papi than they do.. Many posters here would never second guess their personal physician on a serious and complex medical diagnosis. Yet they come to a baseball forum and do the very opposite. Think it over. The same posters who think that they know more than the pitching coach, manager, general manager, and owner - also think that they are more brilliant than the doctors. The forum is their ten minutes of fake fame when they convince someone that they really know what they are talking about.

Danny, pardon me but here's where I tell it the way it is. Many players play with injuries and you're statement about players going on the DL with a hangnail is just pure silliness. Is that why Scutaro has played with injuries, why some think that Youk might have been playing despite an injury recently, etc. Many players play through injuries, and some do not. Your point of view is extremely negative and very naive.

    Just my point of view,

Hetch, then how come Ortiz is now ready to play now with a chronic injury that is not going to be any different for him than it was in the past week? Like you said, some guys have a tolerance to pain, some don't, and some don't even make an attempt to play with pain. Contracts? It's a contract year for Big Papi.

During the postgame interview last Wed. night. Papi told Heidi that the medical staff gave him clearance to perhaps play next Tuesday (tomorrow). This was a decision made by the medical staff. What are you making this so complex and running the issue into the ground? It sounds elementary to me.

-I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that those that believe Big Papi is "shutting it down" are not the bulk and mass in size as Big Papi. Taking that in to consideration I doubt you would know the amount of pain he is in, nor be able to compare it to that of a little old woman who claims "it's nice to know I have a higher pain tolerance than a major league baseball player," unless of course the little old lady is larger than a scale can tally.
They admitted after the fact.  Weei did a whole hour on the papi melt down.  They had the scorer on and he explained why he took the run away. This was a few days after the incident and nothing was discussed about it being a joke. His melt down may be related to his time off as well.   Please don't try to sell me that every injury is real.  Bob Ryan and others talk about fake injuries all the time. Even if it were staged, Papi still used profanity which needed to be deleted.
    Posted by jackbu
AH, the talking heads on WEEI went off for an hour about it, so? What does that have to do with anything. They go off on stuff all the time and they certainly weren't aware of the "joke" and even if they were it doesn't sell to talk about it.

As for fake injuries, they are very few and far between for a lot of reasons and which ones are and are not certainly is not something any team would ever share with a beat writer or an Op ed guy like Ryan.

Once again, if it were a joke, the profanity would have been omitted. btw, I am not a weei fan.  I only listen to them when at the gym.  I go with the opposite of whatever they are selling.  This particular morning they presented the case well.  It was after this, that ortiz realized he needed to do some quality control.

Anyone who talks the way you do about players and the team is the furthest thing from a Sox fan, Babe. No one refers to Papi as "sloppy" or even "floppy" except those that are most threatened by him as a player. Find a Yankee board to post your crap on.
