Interestingly Paul Maholm IS Tim Wakefield. Their career numbers are very similar. The benefit with Maholm is he turns 30 this year so he is literally 16 years younger. Wake's career WHIP is a fraction higher but they are very similar pitchers aside from the knuckleball. We could do worse for a number 5 and considering John Lackey's train wreck of a season this past year even a number 4.
I'm with you Moon: present a guaranteed base salary of 4.5 mill. for 2 years(9 mill total) and an option for a 3rd year at 5.5 mill with a similar buyout clause as Pittsburgh had this past season. -

Maybe add an innings pitched incentive to reward steady play and health good health, possible even switching 3rd year to player option if 350 innings are achieved over the 2 years...play off the players invincibility complex. -

no one is going to pay maholm another 6 M contract with him being on the DL to end last season. too risky for anyone, and that is why he has not been signed yet.
if malholm is looking to rebuild his career and is willing to take a 2 M contract for one year he is a good player for the sox to look at. another or the low cost, high potential type guys who may or may not work out. -

If the Sox like his current med reports then a one year offer for reasonable salary seems like a good deal for the player and the Sox. A lefty who can eat innings at the back of the rotation is a nice add and will push Doubront to perform. Player gets a national stage to show his stuff and a chance to experience some team success which he has yet to do. Then re-enter free agency as a 30 yr old lefty starter coming off a healthy and productive season. If Boras was his agent he would instantly be worth 5yrs @ $75M with a 53 page binder to prove it. Classic low risk high reward. Plus he can't be worse than Lackey... -

Adding mediocre pitchers is not going to help this team finish higher than 3rd place. As of right now we are marginally better than we were last year. I believe bailey is better than paps and melancon is an upgrade. But those two moves are not enough to right the ship. we have one of the most unreliable pitching staffs in the league. beckett you never know what kind of year you will get from him, buchholz is 27 has yet to pitch 200 innings in a season, and beyond that we have nothing at this point. Bard? who knows. he was aweful as a starter in the minors and taking him out of the pen hurts us more than it helps us, aceves? he was hit or miss all year in his starts. We need some good, someone who can count on. Get matt garza. He is the guy we need.

You are right on target!! Why others on this forum as well as the FO don't get it.
Beckett and Buchholtz are not reliable!!! Didn't Beckett along with Lester stink in September? So the solution according to the FO is cheap reclamation projects like PP rejects. That's the way to go to miss the playoffs for 3 years in succession. A great way to celebrate 100th fenway reunion. Hope fans rebel and decline subscription to NESN. Luchino needs to stop making false promises when he said we will go over luxury task if we feel it can help the team. -

I've been pushing for Maholm for a while. Really think he would make perfect no.5 guy for RS rotation. Former no.1 draft pick of Buc's who reportedly are one of the teams trying to resign [Cubs/Orioles/ Mariners]. He's a ground ball pitcher who will give you innings. Unfortunately he's played on some of the worst baseball teams of the last decade in Pittsburgh. He's still only 29 yrs old and was having a pretty decent year last year until straining his shoulder and missing last 6 weeks of season last year. If healthy he could be difference maker for RS.

Why would the Mets want Scutaro? A 36yo vet on a one-year deal for a rebuilding team? Better targets are the Braves or Tigers.
I like Gavin Floyd, and I think Middlebrooks is an overrated Kevin Kouzmanoff clone. So a deal built around Middlebrooks for Floyd makes a ton of sense to me. I'm not sure what value Wilson, Anderson and Bowden all carry beyond a "quantity over quality" offering. But I'm sure the teams could work something out without destroying the Red Sox farm system... -

I just thought the Mets, because they lost Reyes, but you are right, the only teams that would trade for Scutaro are ones in contention.Maybe a Scutaro and prospects package could land Jurrjens. (If we could get O'Flaherty also... yipee!) -
