    PED's and the league races

There are allegedly 20 players who are under intense scrutiny from MLB for PED abuse.  ARod seems to be the media Poster Child followed closely by Ryan Braun, and both of them are currently out of baseball.  But what about the other 18?  Accroding to ESPN 17 of them are still playing the game (one is an unsigned free agent) and their performances is affecting the league races.

Bud Selig made a mistake when he announced that the list of 20 existed and then picked and chose the players he'd actively persue.  Again, what about the remaining 18?  Bartolo Colon comes to mind immediately.  How can Bud have a 14 game winner pitching in MLB who's on the list of 20 and stick his head in the sand and pretend that it doesn't exist?

Bud has the authority to do virtually anything that's in the best interest of the game but what he's doing now is in the WORST interest of the game.  He's letting 17 players continue playing when he feels he has enough evidence to ban them from the game for a period of time.

C'mon Bud.  Step up and do the right thing. If you've got the information, release the names, announce the suspensions, and tell us why some are more than others.  Everyone wants the game cleaned up and you're retarding the process along with giving some teams an unfair advantage in their races this year.

Re: PED's and the league races

wish it was that simple S5. Not to mention he isn't "allowed" to publicly announce these things until after the appeals process is OVER. Of course, these things always get leaked but not by the commissioner in a public forum.

Once MLB informs the players of their impending suspension they have 24 days to file for appeal and then the arbitrator has 30 days thereafter to rule on it. So either way it's going to take some time. Brauns case moved quickly because he didn't appeal it. Everyone else is more apt to fight it especially if their team is in the race.

Nelson Cruz is in an interesting situation. He is a FA at the end of the year. Does he cut a similar deal to Braun and sit the rest of the season? that would essentially be quitting on his team in the middle of a pennant race. Or does he fight the suspension as long as possible and try to push it back to next season. Which of course would keep teams from bidding on him because he would be unavailable to play for X number of games.

Re: PED's and the league races

My understanding is that the MLBPA has agreed that the penalties in this current issue aren't subject to the CBA because it's not a penalty for using PED's, rather it's a penalty for being associated with PED's.  A fine line, but a line nontheless.  And a line that the Player's Association agrees with.  Rather, the Werner has said that they don't want players playing whom MLB has "overwheming evidence" against. Instead the PA is going to press the players to negotiate a settlement.  I suggest that Bud and MLB owes it to the fans to let them know who there is "overwhelming evidence" against.

I don't think that the fact that PED's have been a part of the game for years is a reason to not take action ASAP.

Unfair?  To the team and fan bases?  It may be "unfair" to the Angels team and fan base to penalize Colon now, but what about the "unfairness" to the other teams and their fan bases in the division who are playing with "clean" pitchers?  Colon has 14 wins now and that's significant in a division race. To allow him to continue to pitch and garner another possibly 6+ wins is patently unfair to any other team in their division, and at least as unfair to the teams the Angels may play in the playoffs.

I'm aware that there is a school of thought that says that Colon may have done his penance before - but we don't know that.  That's why I said that if Bud has the evidence he should step up and dish out the penalties AND tell the fans why some penalties are harsher than others.  Then the fans and players will know what they're dealing with.

Until he does that this entire season is tainted.

If you have evidence against all of them, they shouldnt pick and choose. Just notify them all at the same time and go fromthere. for all we know, they have let some players know and are just keeping it quiet. Hopefully Bud does the right thing this time.

Re: PED's and the league races

None of what happens will ever be fair to the fans.

The mistake many people make is thinking that Bud Selig, MLB owners ,umpires  and MLB players as a whole actually care about fans.

    If they cared about fans:

Would there ever be a 3 hour rain delay?

Would there have ever been a tie in an All Star Game ( remember this was a game originally supposed to be strictly to bring fans back to the game)?

Would there have been a season shortened and with no World Series?

Would 9 inning games ever last over 4 hours? ( When these are ESPN Sunday night games and you have to get up for work at 6:00AM Monday , well, you just keep hoping this thing doesn't go into extra innings).

What they do care about is the advertisers. You know all those companies you see with their names plastered all over the outfield walls, inside the dugouts, behind homeplate, carved into the grass ( sometimes),etc. And have you ever noticed how long the commercial breaks are on ESPN and FOX games?.....tell me that's done "for the fans"...how many times do you need to see a TACO BELL commercial? or a GEICO ad , or Cialis???, or Chevy trucks? Most people don't want to see these ads 12 times per game....this is not done "for the fans."

They will do what's best for the moneymen. The advertisers, the owners and finally the players. You and I ( fans) rank quite a bit lower on that list.

I agree - Selig needs to pull the trigger on the suspensions IMMEDIATELY if he ever wants to be seen as anything but an absolute door mat in the baseball PEDs era.

It's not just the cheaters on the contending clubs - the Reds and Pirates have the lead in the two wild-card spots right now.  They both have 9 games left against the Brewers, who have gone from a bad team with Braun to a minor-league team without him.  That's 15% of their remaining schedule.  That's unfair to the whole league.

I hear Johnny Peralta is going also on the biogenesis list. he has an OPS of .817 this season and if he misses the rest of the year makes our lineup VS the Tigers that much better.
