MLB retired the number on April 15, 1997 in honor of the 50th anniversaryof Jackie Robinson's first game in MLB.

What about Babe Ruth?
The Red Sox never retired his number. He played 5+ years in Boston.
Luis Tiant? ..talk about a guy who had "quality years" in Boston.
While we're at it let's retire #24 for Evans, # 38 for Schilling, #45 for Pedro, #21 for Clemens, Bruce Hurst? ...hey how about Bernie Carbo??? -

Speaking of numbers...I know Nomar's would never be retired for various reasons....but can they be a bit more selective about who they give it to? I'd like to wear my home #5 jersey without people thinking I'm just a big Rocco Baldelli or Nick Punto fan.
As far as I know they still haven't given #21 out to anyone, including Beckett, who wore the number in Florida. Do they really have to give #5 to any bench player who wants it? -

How about retiring No. 7 for a group -- Ferrell, Dom DiMaggio, Dick Dr. Strangeglove Stuart, Reggie Smith, Rick Burleson, Mike Easler, Steve Lyons, the legendary Phil Plantier, Trot Nixon, J.D. Drew, Cody Ross.
In all seriousness, I'd as much as I like Ferrell, I'd retire it for Dom DiMaggio first.
Ferrell only wore the number two seasons in 1934 and 1935. He wore No. 2 in '36 and '37. And he wore No. 9 in 1933, so his number is already retired. -

Robinson never had any service with the Red Sox, You are, once again, dead wrong. Nothing but pure politics. What about Babe Ruth?
Babe Ruth's number should be retired.
The Red Sox never retired his number. He played 5+ years in Boston.
Luis Tiant? ..talk about a guy who had "quality years" in Boston.
Ferrell's in the Hall of Fame.
While we're at it let's retire #24 for Evans, # 38 for Schilling, #45 for Pedro, #21 for Clemens, Bruce Hurst? ...hey how about Bernie Carbo???
Pedro's number should be retired. The rest aren't HOF members.
If you are going to be flippant, at least give your comment some actual thought.
Babe Ruth never had a number in Boston. Numbers didn't start until sometime in the 1920s. -

The biggest travesty is that #26 has not yet been retired.
They waived the "retire as a Red Sox" policy for Fisk, why not Boggs? -
