Phil Sign Delmon Young for $750K. Better The Gomes!

    Ken Rosenthal@Ken_Rosenthal

announce signing of OF Delmon Young to one-year, $750,000 contract with performance bonuses.

Where were the Boston Red Sox?

At least this guy has a pulse. Granted, he's had some problems. Still he did well in post season play.I'd rather have Young then Johnny Gomes any day.

Delmon Young and Jonny Gomes have played an identical number of MLB games -- 880 each -- with Young posting a career WAR of 0.8 and Gomes a career WAR of 6.2:

Gomes is decidedly better (on a scale of meh to kind-of-ok).

Gap is widened by Gomes being, by all reports, a great clubhouse/glue guy, and Young being a drunken racial slurrer.

Please. Spare me the sabercraptics. Gomes WAT is 2.3, not 6.2!

Look at the record. Young also plays the field, and has a great arm.

His lifetime BA is FORTY POINTS HIGHER. He has 71 more career RBI.

I know, RBI doesn't count with stat geeks.

To say nothing about being FIVE years younger.

Gomes has never had a hit in post season! Young is .264 with 8 HR and 15 RBI. .. Gomes? GOOSEEGGS!

Take your WAR and shove it.

theres no reason to be rude about it.... So we value things differently than you. not a big deal.

let me throw out some numbers you might understand.

    2012 stats:

                   Young           Gomes

    AB             608              333

    AVG           267              262

    OBP           296              377

    OPS/+     707/89        868/140

    HR             18                18

so in half the amount of ABs Gomes hit just as many HRs, got on base at a higher clip and was overall, a much much better hitter than Young. Young is a better fielder then Gomes but since gomes will be playing mostly in the Fens LF his defensive faults are minimized. gomes is a great clubhouse guy, young is clubhouse cancer. Its an easy choice really. It should be telling that "the great player" Delmon young is just being signed now to a 750k contract.

While I agree with this notion of 'Clubhouse cancer" and "great clubhouse guy" being opinionated buzz phrases (whatever that is, I am using my Softy Translation Inference software here), I don't see how they are bigoted.  And, being that the off-the-field knock on Delmon is his drunken hurling of anti-Semitic remarks, your comment is extremely ironic.  Kudos.

his skin pigmintation has nothing to do with his clubhouse stature.. Its been well documented that Young is a diva and has off the field problems. Gomes -by all accounts- gets along well with everyone and doesn't bring any baggage. To say nothing of their baseball skill which as proven by facts, gomes is better. 4mil per year better? we'll see

Here are links to Baseball Reference, which shows Young with a career WAR of 0.6 and Gomes with a career WAR of 2.3:

not much. But from the limited defensive work i've seen of gomes and Young i think young is a better fielder.

Gomes career WAR is 6.2.  He was valued at 2.1WAR last year alone.

Young certainly has an elite throwing arm, but is a horrific defensive outfielder otherwise.  There was a reason Detroit limited him to DH duties last year, and it was not because of the fielding prowess of Andy Dirks.

I would look beyond the bat-throwing incident with Young.   That was several years ago, and presumably he has grown up somewhat since.  But then last year, he had other problems.  bump in the road?  Maybe not, but if the Sox want a better "image," Delmon young is certainly not the easiest guy to root for.

His image does not even bother me all that much.  I have no intentions of hanging out with him.  But the real problem with Delmon young is that he has never even come close to reaching the potential that made him the #1 consensus prospect.  Could he still reach it?  Maybe, but if a 27yo outfielder with 6 eyars of MLB experience is settling for league minimum offers in mid-January, it is a STRONG indication of exactly how far his stock has dropped since every baseball publications ranked him as the top prospect.

However, if you like big names and untapped potential, Brandon Wood is still available...
