I'm thinking a runaway division title softens the blow a bit, no?

Give it a rest, man. Pineda shows up in ST injured. He's now rehabbing. What Pineda offers next season and the seasons after is his true worth. Same for Montero.

Who said anything about Lavarnway, mikey?  you're still going back to the Montero/Lavarnway discussion/debate from last year?  this is in reference to the value of the trade, not one catching prospect vs. the other, on the respective teams. that said, Montero has had a full season in the majors, too soon to say isn't it? just as hard to say about the trade, yet.

Jesus Montero has posted a .299/.352/.436/.787 line in 129 plate appearances since the All Star break despite playing home games at Safeco Field, which severely suppresses hitting numbers, especially those of righthanded hitters.

On the season, Montero has posted a .323/.357/.480/.837 line in 213 plate appearances on the road.

Don't underestimate the negative effect of Safeco Field. Opposing hitters have made 4,529 plate appearances against Seattle pitchers this season. Here are the home/away splits for Seattle opponents against Mariner pitching:

    SAFECO 2166 PA, .219/.278/.327/.606
    at home 2363 PA, .265/.326/.449/.774

Jesus Montero is a 22-year-old work in progress for a franchise that has another catcher -- Mike Zunino -- as perhaps its top prospect. The Mariners should find room for everyone.

    Revisiting tom-uk's June 25 thread:

    http://www.boston.com/community/forums.html?plckForumPage=ForumDiscussion&plckDiscussionId=Cat%3aSportsForum%3a81df60f3-70ee-4ca3-9336-8cf2c0a8301aDiscussion%3ac19ea1f8-9722-4ff2-a354-8b4a76a28025&plckCurrentPage=0

... Jesus Montero has struck out in 19.3 percent of his 2012 plate appearances while Will Middlebrooks finished with a strikeout rate of 24.5 percent.

    Re: Pineda DUI

I don't understand how BA could have him at #4 then #3 and then #6 but he can't even play 1B despite working at it.  I thought the BA rankings were important, damn it.

    Montero has been
taking ground balls at first base in batting practice for a while now, but this is the first public confirmation that the Mariners are working towards using him as a first baseman. The writing has been on the wall for a while, though. While Montero has caught both of the last two games, 14 of his previous 17 outings had come at DH, and the selection of Mike Zunino (and subsequent promotion to Double-A) suggests that the Mariners have already determined that Montero’s catching career is going to be short lived. http://www.ussmariner.com/2012/08/14/jesus-montero-first-baseman/

Tom, i think Steven meant only in relation to Pineda's tenure with the Yanks, in getting injured almost immediately, and now getting in trouble while hurt..at least Montero is ON the field and playing..
